- Als Pseudohypertrophie wird in der Medizin eine Organvergrößerung durch Vermehrung des interstitiellen Bindegewebes verstanden. Als interstitiell wird das Bindegewebe bezeichnet, das innerhalb der Organe zwischen den Parenchymzellen, also den organspezifischen Zellen, liegt. - Pseudohypertrophy, or false enlargement, is an increase in the size of an organ due to infiltration of a tissue not normally found in that organ. It is commonly applied to enlargement of a muscle due to infiltration of fat or connective tissue, famously in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This is in contrast with typical muscle hypertrophy, in which the muscle tissue itself increases in size. Because pseudohypertrophy is not a result of increased muscle tissue, the muscles look bigger but are actually weaker. Pseudohypertrophy is typically the result of a disease, which can be a disease of muscle or a disease of the nerve supplying the muscle. Causes of pseudohypertrophy include muscle diseases: dystrophinopathies, limb-girdle muscular dystrophies, metabolic myopathy, Dystrophic myotonias, Non-dystrophic myotonias, endocrine disorders, parasitic muscle conditions, amyloid and sarcoid myopathy, and granulomatous myositis. Neurological causes include radiculopathy, poliomyelitis, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, spinal muscular atrophy. Pseudohypertrophy can be broken up into the following roots, suffixes, and prefixes:
* Pseudo means 'false' or 'fake'. The etymology is from the Greek word ψεύδω (pseúdō), which means to lie or deceive.
* hyper means 'extreme' or 'beyond normal'. The etymology is from the Greek word ὑπέρ (hupér), which means over, above; beyond, to the extreme.
* trophy means 'nourishment', or 'development'. The etymology is from the Greek word τροφή (trophḗ), which means food, nourishment. The term was used by Duchenne de Boulogne in his description of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in one of his works "paralysie musculaire pseudo-hypertrophique." (en)
- Pseudohypertrofie is een term uit de geneeskunde die slaat op een orgaan, zoals de spieren. Het woord hypertrofie van de spieren geeft aan, dat de spieren groter zijn, dat er meer spiermassa is dan normaal. Hypertrofie kan bijvoorbeeld duiden op zwaar lichamelijk werk of zware lichamelijke training. Zo zijn de spieren van met name bodybuilders hypertrofisch. Het pseudo voorafgaand aan hypertrofie wil zeggen, dat het lijkt alsof de spieren groot en dik zijn, maar dat dit in werkelijkheid niet zo is. Men ziet dan van de buitenkant een dikke spier, maar bij testen blijkt dat de kracht van de spier niet groot is, en bij het maken van bijvoorbeeld scans zal men zien dat inderdaad niet de hoeveelheid spiermassa vergroot is, maar een ander soort weefsel. Pseudohypertrofie komt bijvoorbeeld voor bij de Ziekte van Duchenne. Jongetjes die deze ziekte hebben, zullen in de loop van hun korte leven steeds meer spierkracht verliezen. Aan de kuiten is de pseudohypertrofie het best te zien: de kuiten zijn prominent vanwege een toename van vetweefsel en bindweefsel, maar de kuitspieren zelf zijn smal en zwak. Het tegenovergestelde van hypertrofie is hypotrofie. Ook de term dystrofie houdt hiermee verband. (nl)
