- Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit (Formelzeichen α) ist ein Begriff aus der Statistik für:
* die Wahrscheinlichkeit für den Fehler 1. Art (auch α Fehler) bei einem Test oder
* die Falschklassifikationsrate bei der Beurteilung eines Klassifikators. Die für einen statistischen Test festgelegte maximal zulässige Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit wird auch als Signifikanzniveau bezeichnet. Im Fall, dass die Nullhypothese auf diesem Niveau verworfen wird, entspricht sie der maximalen Wahrscheinlichkeit für den Fehler 1. Art, dass die Nullhypothese abgelehnt wird, obwohl sie richtig ist. Je kleiner diese Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit ist, umso größer ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit für den Fehler 2. Art, dass die Nullhypothese nicht abgelehnt wird, obwohl sie falsch ist. Die Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit entspricht nicht dem bei der Durchführung eines Tests berechneten p-Wert. Sie besagt auch nicht, mit welcher Wahrscheinlichkeit eine Hypothese richtig ist. (de)
