- Als Phantom Ride [ˈfæntəm ɹaɪd], also ‚scheinbare oder geisterhafte Fahrt‘, wird ein Genre der frühen Filmgeschichte bezeichnet, das um 1900 besonders in Großbritannien und den Vereinigten Staaten populär war. Zur Erstellung der Phantom Rides wurde eine Filmkamera an die Spitze einer Lokomotive montiert, welche die Fahrt als Point-of-View-Shot aufzeichnete. Die dynamischen Präsentationen von Landschaften in den Phantom Rides waren die ersten Beispiele für Kamerafahrten in der Filmgeschichte. Als Vorläufer der stellen sie eine Vorform der Dokumentarfilme dar. Eine moderne Variante sind die Führerstandsmitfahrten, die seit den 1990er Jahren im Nachtprogramm einiger Fernsehsender ausgestrahlt wurden. Die Phantom Rides sind auch für die Entwicklung des narrativen Films von Bedeutung, da sie zur Etablierung des Filmschnitts als künstlerischem Ausdrucksmittel beitrugen. - Los paseos fantasma o panoramas fantasma fueron uno de los primeros géneros cinematográficos populares en Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos a finales del siglo XIX. Se denomina así el género de películas del cine temprano conocidas también como “películas ferrocarriles”. Las películas, que son anteriores a la verdadera narrativa, simplemente muestran el progreso de un vehículo que se mueve hacia adelante, generalmente filmado atando a un camarógrafo al frente de un tren en movimiento. El término viaje fantasma se aplicó porque la posición de la cámara significaba que solo se podían ver la pista y el paisaje y el movimiento parecía provenir de una fuerza invisible. Se trataba de una nueva experiencia visual para el público, como si se tratase de los ojos de un fantasma atravesando velozmente el aire. Aunque muchas de las primeras películas mostraban pistas locales, la demanda de nuevas imágenes llevó a la filmación de lugares más exóticos. Pre-dating true narrative, the films simply show the progress of a vehicle moving forwards, usually shot by strapping a cameraman to the front. The term phantom ride was applied because the position of the camera meant that only the track and scenery could be seen and the movement appeared to be coming from an invisible force. Though many early films showed local tracks the demand for new footage led to more exotic locations being filmed. This brought a new dimension to the genre, showing foreign lands to those who would otherwise never see them. The genre is also significant, despite its short-lived popularity, due to the role it played in the development of the tracking shot, longer films and film editing, as well as its re-emergence in 4D film and simulation.
