- Paul Mark Scott (25 March 1920 – 1 March 1978) was an English novelist best known for his tetralogy The Raj Quartet. In the last years of his life, his novel Staying On won the Booker Prize (1977). The series of books was dramatised by Granada Television during the 1980s and won Scott the public and critical acclaim that he had not received during his lifetime. Born in suburban London, Scott was posted to India, Burma and Malaya during World War II. On return to London he worked as a notable literary agent, before deciding to write full time from 1960. In 1964 he returned to India for a research trip, though he was struggling with ill health and alcoholism. From the material gathered he created the novels that would become The Raj Quartet. In the final years of his life he accepted a visiting professorship at the University of Tulsa, where much of his private archive is held. (en)

Urodził się jako młodszy z dwojga synów. Uczył się w prywatnej szkole Winchmore Hill Collegiate School, ale mając 14 lat z powodu kłopotów finansowych w rodzinie musiał przerwać naukę. Pracując jako urzędnik wieczorowo uczył się buchalterii. W 1940 powołany do armii. W 1941 roku spotkał i poślubił w Torquay Penny. W 1943 roku posłano go jako oficera armii brytyjskiej do Indii. Wojnę zakończył w stopniu kapitana walcząc o Birmę. Po zwolnieniu z armii w 1946 roku zatrudniony w 2 małych wydawnictwach. Jego dwie córki(Carol i Sally) urodziły się w 1947 i 1948 roku. Indie, które poznał jako żołnierz stały się miłością jego życia i głównym tematem pisanych książek. Wrócił do nich w 1964 roku zaczynając pisać Kwartet (cykl 4 powieści o Indiach połączonych osobami głównych bohaterów: wychowanego w Anglii Indusa Hari Kumara, Angielki Daphne Manners i inspektora policji Ronalda Merricka w fikcyjnym mieście indyjskim Mayapore). Podczas pisania tych powieści odwiedził Indie jeszcze dwukrotnie. Dorabiał publikując artykuły w The Times, the Times Literary Supplement, New Statesman i Country Life. Zmarł na raka 1 marca 1978 kilka miesięcy po otrzymaniu za Nagrody Bookera, której powodu choroby nie mógł już odebrać osobiście. (pl)
