Patrick Victor Martindale White (28 May 1912 — 30 September 1990) was an Australian author who was widely regarded as a major English-language novelist of the 20th century. From 1935 until his death, he published 12 novels, two short-story collections and eight plays. His fiction freely employs shifting narrative vantagepoints and a stream of consciousness technique. In 1973, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Po ukończeniu studiów pozostał w Londynie, w czasie II wojny światowej służył w Royal Air Force na Bliskim Wschodzie, w Afryce Północnej i Grecji. Po wojnie wraca do Australii i na stałe osiedla się w pobliżu Sydney. Debiutuje w 1935 tomem poetyckim The Ploughman and Other Poems, swoją pierwszą powieść wydaje w 1939, jednak do połowy lat 50. nie odnosi większych sukcesów i okresowo zrywa z literaturą. Przełomem okazuje się wydana w 1956 powieść Drzewo człowiecze, następnie ukazuje się Voss, oparta na autentycznych wydarzeniach z połowy XIX wieku (wyprawa Ludwiga Leichhardta) powieść historyczna o zdobywaniu kontynentu australijskiego przez pierwszych kolonizatorów. Najwybitniejszy utwór w dorobku pisarza ukazuje się w 1961. Wóz ognisty to rozbudowana, wielowątkowa panorama australijskiego społeczeństwa w pierwszej połowie XX wieku. Bohaterami tej powieści są kolejne fale imigrantów przybywających na Antypody, ale także Aborygen oraz cudem uratowany z Holocaustu niemiecki Żyd. W ten sposób i do Australii docierają wojenny koszmar oraz moralne dylematy odległej Europy. W następnej dekadzie powstają kolejne istotne książki Australijczyka: The Burnt Ones, Węzeł czy Wiwisekcja. W 1973 otrzymuje Nobla za epickie i psychologiczne mistrzostwo, dzięki któremu odkryty został nowy literacki kontynent. Niektórzy publicyści i krytycy łączą jednak werdykt noblowskiego jury z przypadajacą na ten okres 200 setną rocznicą geograficznych odkryć Jamesa Cooka.
