- Orpheus Descending is a three-act play by Tennessee Williams. It was first presented on Broadway on March 17, 1957 but had only a brief run (68 performances) and modest success. It was revived on Broadway in 1989, directed by Peter Hall and starring Vanessa Redgrave and Kevin Anderson. The production ran for 13 previews and 97 performances. The play is a rewrite of an earlier play by Williams called Battle of Angels, which was written in 1940. Williams wrote the character of Myra Torrance for Tallulah Bankhead, but she turned down the role, saying "The play is impossible, darling, but sit down and have a drink with me." The production previewed in Boston the same year, starring Miriam Hopkins. It was the first produced play written by Williams and by his account it "failed spectacularly". At one point, Boston's city censors and the City Council threatened to shut down the production over its "lascivious and immoral" language. Battle of Angels remained un-produced in New York for 34 years, until the Circle Repertory Company opened their sixth season with it in 1974, directed by Marshall W. Mason. Williams was rewriting Battle of Angels by 1951. When Orpheus Descending appeared in 1957, Williams wrote: "On the surface it was and still is the tale of a wild-spirited boy who wanders into a conventional community of the South and creates the commotion of a fox in a chicken coop. But beneath that now familiar surface it is a play about unanswered questions that haunt the hearts of people and the difference between continuing to ask them...and the acceptance of prescribed answers that are not answers at all." C'est en fait une version différente de (Battle of Angels), une pièce écrite par Tennessee Williams en 1940, la pièce est une métaphore du mythe d'Orphée. En 1960, sous la direction de Sidney Lumet, une adaptation cinématographique a été réalisée, sous le titre original de The Fugitive Kind, traduit en français par L'Homme à la peau de serpent. Marlon Brando (Val) et Anna Magnani (Lady) en étaient les acteurs principaux. C'est une des rares adaptations de ses œuvres dont Tennessee Williams a reconnu la qualité. (fr)

Il dramma si rivelò un flop al suo debutto a Broadway, rimanendo in cartellone per 68 repliche, e Tallulah Bankhead, per cui Williams aveva scritto il ruolo di Lady Torrance, aveva rifiutato il ruolo poiché riteneva l'opera "impossibile". L'opera è una rilettura in chiave moderna del mito di Orfeo ed Euridice che tratta i temi del potere delle passioni, dell'arte e dell'immaginazione nel dare nuova linfa e un nuovo scopo alla vita. Ambientata in una piccola comunità nel Sud degli Stati Uniti, la pièce racconta dei cambiamenti che il giovane e misterioso Val porta nella vita di Lady Torrance, la proprietaria del negozio che lo assume. Mentre veglia il marito morente, Lady si ritrova affascinata da questo sconosciuto con una chitarra, un uomo che risveglia in lei i sogni e le speranze della sua giovinezza. Il risveglio dell'amore, della speranza e della passione avrà però conseguenze tragiche per i due protagonisti. Williams descrisse la sua opera dicendo: "in superficie [il dramma] era ed è la storia di uno spirito libero che arriva in una comunità molto convenzionale del Sud e crea la stessa confusione di una volpe in un pollaio. Ma sotto questa superficie familiare è un dramma sulle domande senza risposte che tormentano i cuori delle persone, e sulla differenza tra continuare a porci queste domanda ed accettare risposte prestabilite che non sono affatto delle risposte".
