- Die Orkadischen Seen waren eine Anzahl von Seen, die während des Devons in der Region des heutigen Schottlands, der Orkney und der Shetlands bestanden. Die von ihnen hinterlassenen Sedimentgesteine sind Teil des vor etwa 410 bis 370 Millionen Jahren abgelagerten Old-Red-Sandsteins und von Geologen und Paläontologen seit den 1830er Jahren untersucht worden. Die Gesteine enthalten eine Vielfalt von gut erhaltenen Fossilien, darunter vor allem Reste von Fischen, die einen Einblick in die Entwicklung der Fische während dieser Zeit erlauben. (de)
- The Orcadian Basin is a sedimentary basin of Devonian age that formed mainly as a result of extensional tectonics in northeastern Scotland after the end of the Caledonian orogeny. During part of its history, the basin was filled by a lake now known as Lake Orcadie. In that lacustrine environment, a sequence of finely bedded sedimentary rocks was deposited, containing well-preserved fish fossils, with alternating layers of mudstone and coarse siltstone to very fine sandstone. These flagstones split easily along the bedding and have been used as building material for thousands of years. The deposits of the Orcadian Basin form part of the Old Red Sandstone (ORS). The lithostratigraphic terms lower, middle and upper ORS, however, do not necessarily match exactly with sediments of lower, middle and upper Devonian age, as the base of the ORS is now known to be in the Silurian and the top in the Carboniferous. - Il Bacino Orcadiano, o Bacino delle Orcadi, è un bacino sedimentario risalente al Devoniano che si è formato come risultato di una tettonica distensiva nel nordest della Scozia, dopo la fine dell'orogenesi caledoniana. Per parte della sua storia il bacino ha accolto un lago noto come Lake Orcadie. In quell'ambiente lacustre si è depositata una sequenza di rocce sedimentarie fini derivanti dalla deposizione di fanghi carbonatici (peliti), contenenti pesci fossili ben conservati entro un'alternanza di strati che vanno dalle siltiti grossolane fino alle più fini arenarie. Queste lastre di pietra (lose) si scindono facilmente secondo il piano di deposizione e sono usate da millenni come pietra da costruzione. I depositi del Bacino Orcadiano fanno parte della formazione nota come Old Red Sandstone (ORS). I termini litostratigrafici di ORS inferiore, medio e superiore non coincidono tuttavia con i sedimenti del Devoniano inferiore, medio e superiore, poiché attualmente viene riconosciuto che la base dell'ORS si situa nel Siluriano mentre il limite superiore si trova nel Carbonifero.
