- تقدم الجامعة الافتراضية وهي كما تعرف (بالإنجليزية:Virtual university برامج التعليم العالي من خلال الوسائط الإلكترونية، وعادة ما تكون في الإنترنت. وهنالك بعض المؤسسات التعليمية التي تقدم التعلم عبر الإنترنت كجزء من الدورات الجامعية الممتدة، بينما يقدم البعض الآخر الدورات عبر الإنترنت فقط، وتعتبر بمثابة شكل من أشكال التعليم عن بعد. والهدف من الجامعات الافتراضية هو توفير الوصول إلى الجزء من السكان الذين لن يتمكنوا من الحضور إلى الحرم الجامعي، لأسباب مثل بعد المسافة - حيث يعيش الطلاب بعيدًا جدًا عن الحرم الفعلي لحضور فصول منتظمة؛ وهنالك حاجة إلى المرونة — حيث يحتاج بعض الطلاب إلى المرونة للدراسة في المنزل كلما كان ذلك مناسبًا لهم. وبعض هذه المنظمات موجودة فقط كما هي مترابطة بشكل فضفاض، الذي يجمع بين الجامعات والمعاهد أو الأقسام التي توفر معا عددا من الدورات، سواءً كانت عبر الإنترنت والتلفزيون أو وسائل الإعلام الأخرى، التي تكون منفصلة ومتميزة عن البرامج التي تقدمها مؤسسة فردية خارج المجموعة.وأما بالنسبة للبعض الآخر فهي منظمات فردية ذات إطار قانوني، ومع ذلك يطلق عليها «افتراضية» لأنها تظهر فقط على الإنترنت، وبدون موقع مادي بإستثناء وحداتها الإدارية. ولا يزال من الممكن تنظيم جامعات افتراضية أخرى من خلال مواقع فعلية محددة أو متعددة، سواءً كانت مع أو بدون حرم جامعي فعلي لتلقي تسليم البرنامج، وذلك يحدث من خلال الوسائط التكنولوجية التي يتم بثها من موقع آخر، حيث يقوم الأساتذة بإلقاء محاضرات متلفزة. وتتم إدارة تسليم البرنامج في الجامعة الافتراضية من خلال تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات، مثل صفحات الويب والبريد الإلكتروني والمصادر الأخرى المتصلة بالشبكة. و نظراً إلى أن الجامعات الافتراضية جديدة نسبيًا وتتنوع على نطاق واسع، فلا تزال هناك أسئلة حول الاعتماد وجودة التقييم. - Eine Virtuelle Universität oder Virtuelle Hochschule bezeichnet Initiativen, die eine internetbasierte Hochschullehre anbieten. Ende der 1990er Jahre begannen im deutschsprachigen Raum die Bestrebungen, einige erfolgreiche Beispiele aus den USA in eigene Projekte umzusetzen. Finanziert wurden die Vorhaben vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) auf Bundesebene in Deutschland, sowie den Kultusministerien der Länder, aber auch von einzelnen Hochschulen. (de)
- A virtual university (or online university) provides higher education programs through electronic media, typically the Internet. Some are bricks-and-mortar institutions that provide online learning as part of their extended university courses while others solely offer online courses. They are regarded as a form of distance education. The goal of virtual universities is to provide access to the part of the population who would not be able to attend a physical campus, for reasons such as distance—in which students live too far from a physical campus to attend regular classes; and the need for flexibility—some students need the flexibility to study at home whenever it is convenient for them to do so. Some of these organizations exist only as loosely tied combines of universities, institutes or departments that together provide a number of courses over the Internet, television or other media, that are separate and distinct from programs offered by the single institution outside of the combine. Others are individual organizations with a legal framework, yet are called "virtual" because they appear only on the Internet, without a physical location aside from their administration units. Still other virtual universities can be organized through specific or multiple physical locations, with or without actual campuses to receive program delivery through technological media that is broadcast from another location where professors give televised lectures. Program delivery in a virtual university is administered through Information and communications technology such as web pages, e-mail and other networked sources. - La notion d'université numérique est relativement large. Bien au-delà de l'enseignement à distance utilisant le courrier électronique et la webcam ou la plate-forme de partage, elle recouvre tous les systèmes pédagogiques (de niveau universitaire, école d'ingénieur...), ou les systèmes internes propres à des universités ou à certains cours d'une université, dès lors qu'ils utilisent de manière privilégiée les patrimoines matériel et immatériel numériques.
