- Die New Patriotic Party (NPP) wurde 1992 in Ghana von Unterstützern des früheren Premierministers Kofi Abrefa Busia gegründet. Daneben sieht sich die NPP in der Tradition des J.B. Danquah, dem Parteiführer der 1947 gegründeten United Gold Coast Convention Party (U.G.C.C.), die als nationalistische Reformbewegung maßgeblich am Entstehen des Unabhängigkeitsprozesses beteiligt war. Der ehemalige Präsident Ghanas John Agyekum Kufuor wurde ebenso von der Regierungspartei gestellt wie die Minister der Regionalparlamente. Bei den Parlamentswahlen in Ghana am 7. Dezember 2016 errang die New Patriotic Party die absolute Mehrheit von 171 Sitzen. Desde la democratización del país en 1992, el NPP es uno de los dos principales partidos políticos del país, manteniendo un bipartidismo con el centroizquierdista Congreso Nacional Democrático. Gobernó el país entre 2001 y 2009 durante la presidencia de John Kufuor, manteniendo una mayoría absoluta en el Parlamento. En 2009 el NPP fue derrotado por el NDC y debió abandonar el poder. - The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a centre-right and liberal-conservative political party in Ghana. Since the democratisation of Ghana in 1992, it has been one of the two dominant parties in Ghanaian politics, with its leading rival being the centre-left National Democratic Congress (NDC). John Kufuor of the NPP was President of Ghana from 2001 to 2009. At the elections held on 7 December 2004, the party won 129 out of 230 seats. The NPP candidate was Kufuor, who was re-elected as president with 52.75% of the vote. The New Patriotic Party symbol is the African elephant and the New Patriotic Party colours are red, white, and blue. In the 2008 general election, the NPP candidate Nana Akufo-Addo conceded to losing in the closely contested presidential election runoff amidst accusations of vote rigging, with Akufo-Addo receiving 49.77% of the votes, versus 50.23% for John Atta Mills, the NDC candidate. In the 2012 general election, the NPP faced a similar situation from vote results provided by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC). Nana Akufo-Addo received 47.74% of the vote, while NDC candidate John Mahama received 50.7% amidst accusations of electoral fraud. Akufo-Addo was chosen as the NPP's candidate for a third time in the 2016 elections and defeated Mahama in the first round (winning 53.83% of the votes). (en)

- Nya patriotiska partiet (NPP) är ett av två ledande politiska partier i Ghana. I maj 1994 blev en parlamentsledamot från NPP, Karim Salifu Adam, häktad under Jerry Rawlings styre. Adam uppgav att han torterats medan hade hölls totalisolerad i hemligt häkte. Senare dömdes han till högförräderi, för att ha motarbetat den dåvarande regeringen. När John Kufuor vann presidentvalet år 2000, kom det medföra det första fredliga maktövertagandet sedan Ghanas självständighet 1957. Kufuor omvaldes 2004 men eftersom grundlagen förhindrar omval mer än en gång så kunde han inte ställa upp i presidentvalet 2008. NPP:s kandidat i detta val blev istället Nana Akufo-Addo, som i den inledande valomgången fick flest röster (49,13 %). Men eftersom ingen kandidat fick över 50% av rösterna så kommer en andra valomgång att hållas den 28 december 2008. Akufo-Addo ställs då mot sin huvudmotståndare John Atta-Mills, Rawlings gamle vicepresident. (sv)
