První vydání bylo v červnu 1997 a jednalo se o nástupce webového prohlížeče Netscape Navigator, který byl doplněn o groupwarové funkce. Byl k dispozici v několika edicích jako „Personal“ či „Complete“. Součásti balíku byly:
* Netscape Navigator – webový prohlížeč
* Netscape Messenger – e-mailový klient a od verze 4.5 i klient pro diskusní skupiny.
* Netscape Collabra – klient pro diskusní skupiny, který se od verze 4.5 sloučil s Messengerem.
* Netscape Address Book – kontakty
* Netscape Composer – HTML editor
* Netscape Netcaster
* Netscape Conference
* Netscape Calendar – kalendářový klient (ve verzi 4.72 odstraněn z důvodů vypršení licence). Poznámka: Jednotlivé edice balíku měly rozdílné počty komponent. V roce 1998 vyšla verze 4.5, která přinesla řadu vylepšení. Ve stejný čas Netscape odstartovat projekt Mozilla. Poslední verzí je 4.8, která byla uvolněna v srpnu 2002. Nach dem sogenannten Browserkrieg versuchte Netscape mit dem Netscape Communicator 4.5 im Oktober 1998 einen Neuanfang, der durch den Aufkauf des Unternehmens durch AOL im November 1998 in Frage gestellt wurde. Nachdem 1998 durch die Netscape Communications der Quellcode des Netscape Communicators freigegeben war, entwickelte sich auf dessen Basis die Mozilla Application Suite, deren Version 0.6 am 14. November 2000 erschien. Mit der letzten stabilen Version 1.7.13 der Mozilla Suite im April 2006 hat die Mozilla Foundation die offizielle Entwicklung zugunsten des Webbrowsers Firefox und des E-Mail-Programms Thunderbird eingestellt. - Netscape Communicator (or Netscape 4) is a discontinued Internet suite produced by Netscape Communications Corporation, and was the fourth major release in the Netscape line of browsers. It was first in beta in 1996 and was released in June 1997. Netscape Communicator addressed the problem of Netscape Navigator 3.x being used as both the name of the suite and the browser contained within it by renaming the suite to Netscape Communicator. It included more groupware features intended to appeal to enterprises. In February 1998, Netscape announced that Mozilla.org would co-ordinate the development of Netscape Communicator 5 as "a dedicated team within Netscape with an associated Web site that will promote, foster and guide open dialog and development of Netscape's client source code." However, the aging Communicator code proved to be difficult to work with, so it was abandoned. The whole source code of Communicator was re-written by Mozilla, who were then testing it as Mozilla Application Suite. Netscape, now owned by AOL, finally released Communicator's successor Netscape 6 in November 2000, based on Mozilla Application Suite with changes and additions. Minor updates to Communicator continued to be issued, culminating in the release of Netscape Communicator 4.8 in August 2002. (en)
