- Merchants of Doubt, (voller Titel: Merchants of Doubt: How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth on Issues from Tobacco Smoke to Global Warming) ist ein 2010 in Englisch erschienenes Sachbuch der amerikanischen Wissenschaftshistoriker Naomi Oreskes und Erik M. Conway, das die organisierte Wissenschaftsleugnung zum Thema hat. Das Buch wurde in neun Sprachen übersetzt, u. a. Japanisch, Chinesisch, Französisch und Spanisch. Seit 2014 ist es auch auf Deutsch unter dem Titel Die Machiavellis der Wissenschaft: Das Netzwerk des Leugnens erhältlich. Das Buch zeigt auf, wie sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten wieder und wieder Wissenschaftler wie beispielsweise Fred Seitz und Fred Singer mit konservativen Think Tanks und privaten Unternehmen zusammenschlossen, um den wissenschaftlichen Konsens in vielen umwelt- und gesundheitswissenschaftlichen Themen zu bestreiten. Beschrieben wird das Abstreiten der Schädlichkeit des Tabakrauchens sowie des Passivrauchens, die Versuche, die Gefährlichkeit des Insektizids DDT herunterzuspielen, die Bemühungen, die Gefahren des sauren Regen und des Ozonloch zu verharmlosen und die Klimawandelleugnung. Bei diesen unterschiedlichen Themen traten teils die gleichen Organisationen und Wissenschaftler auf. Die Kritiken fielen größtenteils hervorragend aus. Oreskes and Conway write that in each case "keeping the controversy alive" by spreading doubt and confusion after a scientific consensus had been reached was the basic strategy of those opposing action. In particular, they show that Fred Seitz, Fred Singer, and a few other contrarian scientists joined forces with conservative think tanks and private corporations to challenge the scientific consensus on many contemporary issues. Some of the book's subjects have been critical of the book, but most reviewers received it favorably. One reviewer said that Merchants of Doubt is exhaustively researched and documented, and may be one of the most important books of 2010. W książce przedstawione są kontrowersje związane z globalnym ociepleniem, paleniem tytoniu, kwaśnymi deszczami, DDT i dziurą ozonową. Oreskes i Conway twierdzą, że podstawową strategią tych, którzy w każdym z tych przypadków sprzeciwiali się podejmowaniu działań, było "podtrzymywanie kontrowersji" poprzez rozpowszechnianie wątpliwości oraz robienie zamieszania po tym, jak został osiągnięty konsensus naukowy. W szczególności wskazują na Freda Seitza, Freda Singera i kilku innych naukowców, którzy połączyli swoje siły z konserwatywnymi think-tankami i prywatnymi korporacjami by stawić czoła naukowemu konsensusowi w wielu współczesnych kwestiach.
