More specifically and fully it is, in Buxtehude’s phrase, a “devotione decantata,” or “sung devotion,” titled Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima, which translates from the Latin as Limbs Most Holy of Our Suffering Jesus. The cycle is considered the first Lutheran oratorio. The stanzas of its main text are drawn from the medieval hymn Salve mundi salutare, also known as the Rhythmica oratio, formerly ascribed to Bernard of Clairvaux but now thought to be by Arnulf of Leuven. Each cantata addresses a part of Jesus’ crucified body: feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and face; in each, Biblical words referring to the limb frame verses of the hymn’s text. (en)

De volledige Latijnse titel Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima betekent "De zeer heilige delen van het lijdende (lichaam) van onze Jezus". De tekst bestaat uit strofen van de middeleeuwse hymne Salve mundi salutare – ook bekend als de Rhythmica oratio – een gedicht dat vroeger werd toegeschreven aan Bernardus van Clairvaux, maar waarschijnlijk geschreven is door de Arnulf van Leuven (overleden 1250). De lange tekst bestaat uit zeven delen, waarin steeds een ander deel van Christus' gekruisigde lichaam wordt bezongen, resp. de voeten, knieën, handen, de zijde, de borst, het hart en het hoofd.
