- Marquis of Valença (in Portuguese Marquês de Valença) was a Portuguese title of nobility granted by royal decree of King Afonso V of Portugal, dated from October 11, 1451, to Dom Afonso of Braganza (1400–1460), who already was 4th Count of Ourém. It is the 1st Marquis title in Portugal. This title was only renovated later in the 17th Century: when the 7th Count of Vimioso (belonging to the 1st Marquis’ lineage) died, King Pedro II of Portugal, through a special decree, issued on December 13, 1681, legitimated the count's natural and only son, Francisco de Paula de Portugal e Castro (Francis III), as 8th Count, and also granted him the title of 2nd Marquis of Valença. - Marquês de Valença é um título nobiliárquico português de juro e herdade criado por D. Afonso V de Portugal, por carta de 11 de Outubro de 1451, em favor de D. Afonso de Portugal, 4.º conde de Ourém, filho primogénito de D. Afonso, 1.º duque de Bragança, e neto primogénito do Condestável e 3.º Conde de Ourém D. Nuno Álvares Pereira. Foi o primeiro título de Marquês concedido em Portugal. O título extinguiu-se por morte sem descendência legítima de D. Afonso, 1.º titular, (o seu primogénito filho bastardo, D. Afonso de Portugal, foi bispo de Évora). O Rei D. João V recriou o título em 10 de Março de 1716, novamente de juro e herdade, e desta feita com Honras de Parente da Casa Real com tratamento de sobrinho, e concedeu-o ao 8.º conde de Vimioso, descendente directo do 1.º titular e do seu filho primogénito (ilegítimo).
