Malaysia started sending athletes to the Southeast Asian Games in 1959 as a Founding member of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) alongside Burma (now Myanmar), Kampuchea (now Cambodia), Laos, Thailand, and the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam).
