- Luci Vari Ruf (o Rufus; llatí: Lucius Varius Rufus) fou un destacat poeta romà, un dels més distingits del període d'August, company i amic de Virgili i Horaci. Aquest darrer el posa el primer entre els bards èpics. També l'elogia Quintilià en relació amb una tragèdia de nom Thyestes. És molt poc esmentat pels autors contemporanis i tot i la fama que va tenir no se'n sap gaire cosa. S'han conservat fragments només de dues de les seves obres i el títol d'una tercera:

- Lucius Varius Rufus (74 př. n. l., někdy se udává 70 př. n. l. – pravděpodobně 14 př. n. l., někdy se udává 15 př. n. l.), římský epický a tragický básník. Jeho první básně sice vznikly ještě za republiky, ale největšího uznání dosáhl v Augustově době, kdy patřil k největším oblíbencům Cilnia Maecenata. Přátelil se s Vergiliem a Horatiem. Vergilius mu odkázal své dílo, především Aeneis, kterou po jeho smrti s vydal. Ačkoliv Varius slíbil, že dílo nevydá, slib nedodržel; lze říci, že právě vydáním Aeneidy se nejvíce proslavil. (cs)

Er war ein Zeitgenosse von Horaz und Vergil, mit denen er in einem Dichterkreis verbunden war, der von Maecenas gefördert wurde. Auch mit Plotius Tucca war er befreundet; zusammen mit ihm gab er nach Vergils Tod dessen Aeneis heraus. Seine Werke sind teils verloren, teils nur fragmentarisch überliefert. Bekannt sind De morte, ein epikureisches Lehrgedicht, aus dem zwölf Verse überliefert sind, und die verlorene Tragödie Thyestes, die 29 v. Chr. bei Spielen zur Feier des Sieges bei Actium aufgeführt wurde. Quintilian bemerkte zu Thyestes, dass sie griechischen Tragödien gewachsen war. (de)

Fue la personalidad más relevante del círculo de Mecenas y autor de una tragedia sobre la historia de Tiestes, Thyestes, representada en el año 29 a. C. en los juegos en celebración de la victoria de Octavio en Accio, que le reportó un millón de sestercios del vencedor y que Quintiliano consideró equiparable a cualquier tragedia griega. Horacio le menciona en su oda I, 6 llamándole Maeonii carminis alite, águila del canto meonio, es decir, en referencia a Homero por ser también poeta épico. De su epopeya nada se ha conservado, salvo el título, Carmen epicum de actis Caesaris et Agrippae, que otros llaman De morte. Llevado de su amistad hacia Virgilio, cuando este murió revisó y publicó, junto con Plotio Tuca, su Eneida, a pesar de que el poeta fallecido había deseado destruirla, y con este acto enterró la fama de su propia epopeya, que, según sus contemporáneos, era también memorable. - Lucius Varius Rufus (/ˈvɛəriəs, ˈvær-/; c. 74 – 14 BC) was a Roman poet of the early Augustan age. He was a friend of Virgil, after whose death he and Plotius Tucca prepared the Aeneid for publication, and of Horace, for whom he and Virgil obtained an introduction to Maecenas. Horace spoke of him as a master of epic and the only poet capable of celebrating the achievements of Vipsanius Agrippa (Odes, i.6); Virgil (under the name of Lycidas, Ecl. ix.35) regretted that he had hitherto produced nothing comparable to the work of Varius or Helvius Cinna. Macrobius (Saturnalia, vi. I, 39; 2, 19) states that Varius composed an epic poem De Morte, some lines of which are quoted as having been imitated or appropriated by Virgil; Horace (Sat. i.10, 43) probably alluded to another epic, and, according to the scholiast on Epistles, i.16, 2 729, these three lines were taken bodily from a panegyric of Varius on Augustus. Varius's most famous literary production was the tragedy Thyestes, which Quintilian (Inst. Orat. x.1, 98) declared fit to rank with any of the Greek tragedies. A didascalia on the play, preserved in a Paris manuscript, states that it was produced at the games celebrated in 29 BC by Octavian in honour of the victory at Actium, and that Varius received a present of a million sesterces from the Roman ruler.
