- LiteStep je alternativní shell pro Windows 9x, 2000 a XP (NT) vydaný pod licencí GNU General Public License (GPL). Inspirací pro jeho vznik byl window manager AfterStep. LiteStep vyvíjel Francis Gastellu nejprve jako uzavřený projekt až do dubna 1998 (verze b23) a poté byl kompletně přepsán (verze 24 a vyšší) nově vytvořeným týmem vývojářů. LiteStep byl později inspirací pro , který podporuje skriptování, a pro . Také byl inspirací pro , který naprogramoval Phil Stopford v roce 1999 - je to kompletní a stabilní náhrada shellu Windows založená na LiteStepu. Normální Windows shell (nazývaný explorer shell) se skládá z lišty s úlohami (taskbar), systémové lišty (system tray), hodin, menu Start a pracovní plochy s ikonami. LiteStep shell má ekvivalenty pro vše, co bylo uvedeno u exploreru, plus další funkce, které nejsou v explorer shellu k dispozici. Např. popup menu s často spouštěnými programy, které lze otevřít nejen pomocí tlačítka Start, ale stiskem pravého tlačítka myši kdekoli na pracovní ploše. Do lišty s úlohami lze vložit přepínání pracovních ploch, vlastní ikony a dokonce i ovládací prvky pro Winamp. LiteStep je tedy plně uživatelsky nastavitelný, ale cenou za to je jeho značná složitost. Pro nastavení LiteStepu se nepoužívá grafické prostředí, ale místo toho se veškerá nastavení zapisují do textových konfiguračních souborů. Podobně, jako jiné alternativní shelly, je i LiteStep založen na myšlence malého jádra, které nahrává konfigurovatelné moduly DLL. Uživatel si množství používaných modulů může přizpůsobit a vytvořit si tak komplexní nebo minimalistické prostředí. Potřebné moduly mohou být automaticky staženy z Internetu. Vzhled a funkčnost pracovní plochy v LiteStepu definuje nainstalované téma. Je to souhrn konfigurací, skriptů a obrázků uložený v .zip nebo .lsz souboru. Formát témat se vyvíjel až ke standardu OTS2 (Open Theme Standard), který umožňuje automatickou instalaci tématu. Uživatelská nastavení jsou oddělena a zůstávají zachována i při změně tématu. LiteStep si pravděpodobně oblíbí uživatelé, kteří si chtějí vytvořit vizuálně zajímavé prostředí nebo své prostředí rádi konfigurují. (cs)
- LiteStep ist eine alternative Benutzeroberfläche (Shell) für Microsoft Windows, die unter der GPL entwickelt wird. Die Shell ist damit ein Ersatz für die Standardfunktionen ab Windows 95. Es wurde inspiriert durch AfterStep, das wiederum durch NeXTStep inspiriert wurde. LiteStep wurde ursprünglich bis April 1998 durch Francis Gastellu als Closed-Source-Projekt entwickelt (Version b23). Ein neues Entwicklerteam schrieb es dann neu. LiteStep ist eine der ältesten Windows-Shell-Alternativen. Es basiert auf der Idee eines schmalen Kerns und vielen nachladbaren konfigurierbaren Modulen (DLLs). Durch diese hohe Flexibilität kann jeder Nutzer das System seinen Bedürfnissen anpassen. Die Weiterentwicklung von LiteStep hat aufgrund der Zusammensetzung des Entwicklerteams zeitweise Aussetzer. Das Programm wird aber kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt. Der Bekanntheitsgrad von LiteStep ist in Deutschland wesentlich geringer als in Ländern wie England, Frankreich und den USA. LiteStep replaces the Windows Shell which provides access to the graphical user interface on Windows-based computers. Depending on the theme used, it can replace or remove shell elements, such as the start menu and taskbar. It can also be used to create informational-type displays. Aside from the core executable, LiteStep is made up of modules, some of which are included with the initial installation. Other modules, which a theme may require to function properly, are automatically downloaded. The modules and core provide users with the ability to create anything from minimal environments, to elaborate and heavily scripted desktops. Customizations are provided in the form of themes, which may be created or modified with a text editor. A theme for LiteStep is a collection of configurations, scripts, and/or images which are distributed in a file with the zip or lsz extension. The lsz file extension is a renamed zip file, which is associated with the LiteStep Theme Installer. (en)
