- Komi Can't Communicate is a manga series written and illustrated by . The series follows the Japanese high school student Shoko Komi, who is suffering from a crippling social anxiety disorder, on her quest to make 100 friends with the help of her classmate Hitohito Tadano. Before its serialization, a one-shot chapter was published in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday on September 16, 2015; the series began serialization in the same magazine on May 18, 2016. Shogakukan has collected its chapters into individual tankōbon volumes. The first volume was published on September 16, 2016. As of April 18, 2022, twenty-five volumes have been published. In November 2018, during their panel at Anime NYC, Viz Media announced that they acquired the license for the manga. The first volume was released in North America on June 11, 2019. The manga is licensed in Southeast Asia by Shogakukan Asia, in Taiwan by Chingwin Publishing Group, in South Korea by SomyMedia, in Thailand by Luckpim, in Indonesia by Elex Media Komputindo, in Vietnam by Kim Đồng Publishing House, in France by Pika Édition, in Germany by Tokyopop, in Italy by J-Pop, in Argentina and Spain by Editorial Ivrea and in Brazil and Mexico by Panini Comics. - On his first day at Itan High School, Hitohito Tadano encounters the beautiful but somewhat scary Shouko Komi, who turns out to be his seatmate. As Komi is despite not talking to anyone extremely popular among her classmates due to her beauty and noble demeanor, Tadano's position as Komi's seatmate incites the other student's jealousy. After observing that Komi does not talk to anyone during the day, Tadano figures out that she suffers from a social anxiety disorder: she is too afraid to talk to anyone. Tadano notices that Komi is able to communicate in writing. She confesses to him that she never had any friends, but would like to make 100 friends in high school. Tadano offers to be her first friend and help her to achieve her dream, which she accepts. Tadano's first attempts to find friends for Komi fail, so he resorts to ask his old childhood acquaintance Najimi Osana, who is a gifted social networker, to befriend Komi. Najimi declines at first, but when Komi's demeanor scares off some unwanted suitors of Najimi, ultimately becomes Komi's friend. To have her practicing social interactions, Najimi sends off Komi to buy a complicated order from a nearby coffee shop. While she manages to get a coffee, she is not able to communicate the order correctly to the barrista, who prepares something different. After seeing that Komi is brought to tears by that experience, Tadano and Najimi humbly apologize to her. Komi befriends Himiko Agari, another of her classmates, who is initially intimidated by Komi's demeanor. Komi's dad buys her an old-fashioned flip phone. Komi never had a mobile phone before, because she had no friends to call. She asks Tadano, Najimi, and Agari to give her their phone number. When Komi is elected class president against her will, Najimi suggest she deserves a higher position. Ultimately, Komi is elected class god, while Tadano becomes the class president. While playing around with her new cell phone, Komi accidentally calls Tadano but immediately hangs up when he replies. Tadano calls her back and manages to have a short conversation with Komi on phone. During break, Komi observes the popular students playing games and wants to join in. Najimi manages to get her and Tadano into the game. Since they admire Komi, the others let her win the games. When it comes to a game where the loser has to make an embarrassing face, Tadano loses deliberately to spare Komi, making him even more unpopular with the other students. After the game, Komi thanks Tadano and tells him she had fun. (en)
- The first year high school students have their annual physical examination. Makeru Yadano, a classmate of Komi, decides to compete with Komi – who is oblivious to this – for the best results. Makeru ends up losing in most categories. The competition between Makeru and Komi continues during the fitness test, while the latter is still unaware. Again, Makeru keeps losing. In the end she wants to concede, but when Komi does not shake her hands, Makeru thinks that Komi does not want to accept her concession. Makeru decides to become Komi's competitor. Najimi invites themselves and Tadano to visit Komi at home after school. There they meet Komi's mother, Shuuko Komi, who looks very much like her daughter but has a very outgoing personality. Najimi is disappointed when Komi and Tadano do nothing unruly when they are left alone. Ren Yamai, one of the popular girls in Komi's class, is obsessed with Komi and deeply in love with her. Yamai kidnaps and threatens Tadano as she sees him as competitor for Komi's affection. Yamai invites Komi and Najimi to her home to befriend Komi. When Komi and Najimi discover Tadano tied up in Yamai's closet, Komi rejects Yamai's friendship and leaves. The day after, Komi asks Tadano whether he still wants to be her friend after what has happened to him. Tadano reassures Komi that he wants to stay her friend. Najimi convinced Yamai to apologize to Komi. Seeing that Yamai truly regrets her actions, Komi accepts the apology and befriends Yamai. Everyone is enthralled how good Komi looks in her summer school uniform. Komi wants to go eat ramen and Tadano, Najimi, and Ageru accompany her. Komi instinctively follows all the unwritten rules of the ramen restaurant, gaining the chef's respect. Komi tries to tell some jokes but has no talent for it. Najimi teases Tadano to show Komi how to do this, but also he also fails. On a rainy day, Tadano is left without umbrella. Komi offers to share her umbrella with him on their way home. Tadano eventually accepts and is thrilled by the sight of Komi having been soaked by the rain. Omoharu Nakanaka is a Chūnibyō in Komi's class. She awkwardly tries to befriend Komi by pretending to know her from another life in a fantasy world. Komi is left somewhat confused when Nakanaka runs off before they can form a "blood contract". Later that day Nakanaka is left without partner during stretching exercises in physical education, so Komi joins her. They become friends. Najimi reveals Tadano's embarrassing past in junior high school. Komi, Najimi, Yamai, Ageru, and Tadano go shopping for clothes, which Komi never has done before. Her friends all pick different outfits for her, before she ultimately chooses a dress Tadano picked for her. Komi visits a beauty salon. Kamiko Arai, a trainee, becomes frustrated by Komi's silence, whereas the owner, Maki Karisu, is able to communicate with Komi without words. When Komi expresses her thanks to Kamiko on leaving without speaking, Kamiko is happy. (en)
