- Liebesträume (German for Dreams of Love) is a set of three solo piano works (S.541/R.211) by Franz Liszt, published in 1850. Originally the three Liebesträume were conceived as lieder after poems by Ludwig Uhland and Ferdinand Freiligrath. In 1850, two versions appeared simultaneously as a set of songs for high voice and piano, and as transcriptions for piano two-hands. The two poems by Uhland and the one by Freiligrath depict three different forms of love. Uhland's "Hohe Liebe" (exalted love) is saintly or religious love: the "martyr" renounces worldly love and "heaven has opened its gates". The second song "Seliger Tod" (blessed death) is often known by its first line ("Gestorben war ich", "I had died"), and evokes erotic love; ("I was dead from love's bliss; I lay buried in her arms; I was wakened by her kisses; I saw heaven in her eyes"). Freiligrath's poem for the third nocturne is about unconditional mature love ("Love as long as you can!", "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst"). (en)

Liebesträume fait souvent référence au nocturne no 3, la plus connue des trois pièces. Elles sont composées pour accompagner des poèmes de Ludwig Uhland et de Ferdinand Freiligrath. Dès leur publication, deux versions apparaissent, une pour voix et piano et une transcription pour piano solo. Les deux poèmes d'Uhland et celui de Freiligrath décrivent trois différentes formes d'amour. L'Hohe Liebe (Amour exalté) de Uhland est un amour saint ou religieux : le martyr renonce à l'amour terrestre et les portes du paradis s'ouvrent pour lui. Le second évoque l'amour érotique, « Gestorben war ich » (littéralement « j'étais mort »). Mort est ici une métaphore faisant référence à la petite mort (« J'étais mort de la volupté d'aimer ; je gisais enterré dans ses bras ; je fus réveillé par ses baisers ; je vis le ciel dans ses yeux. ») Le poème de Freiligrath, celui du fameux nocturne, parle de l'amour mature (« O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst », « Aime aussi longtemps que tu peux aimer »). La terza, destinata a diventare celeberrima, è un notturno in la bemolle maggiore che inizia in "poco allegro" con un dolce tema cantabile, per poi crescere sempre più in un animato molto appassionato. Al tutto fanno da contorno i caratteristici virtuosismi del musicista magiaro, intervallati qua e là da cadenze, scale e funamboliche invenzioni. Il Sogno d'amore n.3 è stato anche orchestrato dall'operettista Victor Herbert e negli ultimi anni, alla composizione originale per pianoforte è stata affiancata l'orchestrazione di Herbert. La Boston Pops Orchestra ha inciso sotto la direzione di Arthur Fiedler il Sogno d'amore insieme alla celeberrima Rapsodia Ungherese n.2 sempre dello stesso Liszt. (it)
