Le sue caratteristiche, in particolare estensione e profondità, sono soggette a forti variazioni stagionali in relazione alle precipitazioni. Prende il nome da Christiana Pretorius, figlia di Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, primo presidente della Repubblica sudafricana del Transvaal.
