- جيا (بالسنسكريتية: ज्या)، وكوتي جيا (بالسنسكريتية: कोटिज्या)و أوتكراما جيا (بالسنسكريتية: उत्क्रमज्या) ثلاث دوال مثلثية وضعها علماء الرياضيات والفلكيون الهنود. أقدم دراسة هندية معروفة تحتوي على إشارات إلى هذه الدوال هي سوريا سيدهانتا. تلك الدوال هي دوال أقواس الدوائر وليست دوال الزوايا. يرتبط كل من جيا وكوتي جيا ارتباطًا وثيقًا بالدوال المثلثية المستخدمة حتى الآن الجيب وجيب التمام. في الواقع، ترجع أصول المصطلحين «جيب» و «جيب التمام» إلى التسميتين السنسكريتِيَّتَيْن «جيا» و «كوتي جيا». - Jyā, koṭi-jyā and utkrama-jyā are three trigonometric functions introduced by Indian mathematicians and astronomers. The earliest known Indian treatise containing references to these functions is Surya Siddhanta. These are functions of arcs of circles and not functions of angles. Jyā and koti-jyā are closely related to the modern trigonometric functions of sine and cosine. In fact, the origins of the modern terms of "sine" and "cosine" have been traced back to the Sanskrit words jyā and koti-jyā. (en)
