- Ο ακοντισμός είναι ένα παλιό αγώνισμα στίβου των Ολυμπιάδων. Βρίσκεται στο πρόγραμμα των αγώνων από την Ολυμπιάδα του 1908 στο Λονδίνο. Όμως, προηγουμένως είχε διεξαχθεί και στους Μεσοολυμπιακούς του 1906 στην Αθήνα. Το αντίστοιχο γυναικείο αγώνισμα μπήκε στο ολυμπιακό πρόγραμμα το 1932 στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες του Λος Άντζελες. (el)
- The javelin throw at the Summer Olympics is one of four track and field throwing events held at the multi-sport event. The men's javelin throw has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since 1908, being the last of the current throwing events to feature at the Olympics after the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw. The women's event was first contested at the 1932 Olympics, becoming the second women's throws event after the discus in 1928. Two variants of the javelin have featured on the Olympic programme: a freestyle version was first contested at the 1906 Intercalated Games and then again the 1908 London Olympics. A one-off two-handed version was held at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. (en)
- Le lancer du javelot masculin figure au programme des Jeux olympiques depuis la quatrième édition, en 1908 à Londres. Les femmes participent à cette épreuve depuis les Jeux de 1932, à Los Angeles. Avec trois médailles d'or remportées, le Tchèque Jan Železný est l’athlète le plus titré dans cette épreuve. Sa compatriote Barbora Špotáková et l'Allemande Ruth Fuchs, avec deux titres, détiennent quant à elles le record de victoires féminines. Les records olympiques de la discipline sont actuellement détenus par le Norvégien Andreas Thorkildsen, auteur de 90,57 m en finale des Jeux olympiques de 2008, à Pékin, et par la Cubaine Olisdeilys Menéndez, créditée de 71,53 m lors des Jeux olympiques de 2004, à Athènes.
