Puede tener lugar en espacios públicos y centros determinados (como clubs nudistas, saunas, balnearios y spas) o bien en un ámbito privado como el hogar, en un contexto familiar. Todavía es practicada por algunas tribus indígenas. La desnudez colectiva es un tema de debate e incluso tabú, marcado por estereotipos y considerado de manera diferente según las costumbres de los individuos y las sociedades. La desnudez colectiva era corriente en Occidente hasta la década de 1850, sobre todo para la natación o el baño. Hoy en día está mal vista, sobre todo la desnudez masculina.
