Er trat als Philosoph, Gelehrter, Ökonom, Politiker und Geschäftsmann recht vielseitig in Erscheinung. Als Finanzier war er zudem einer der Hauptanleger der Niederländischen Ostindien-Kompanie. Er lebte in Amsterdam, Paris und London und stand im Austausch mit wichtigen Persönlichkeiten – u. a. mit Voltaire und David Hume – der europäischen Aufklärung. (de)
- Isaac de Pinto (10 April 1717 – 13 August 1787) was a Dutch merchant and banker of Portuguese Sephardic Jewish origin who was one of the main investors in the Dutch East India Company, as well as a scholar and philosophe who concentrated on Jewish emancipation and national debt. Pinto published mainly in French and once in Portuguese. According to historian Richard Popkin, Pinto "was one of the very few Jews of the eighteenth century, before Moses Mendelssohn, able to operate and express himself in the mainstreams of European culture." - Isaac de Pinto est un banquier et moraliste juif, d’origine portugaise, né à Amsterdam le 20 avril 1717 et mort à La Haye le 14 août 1787. Il habita pendant quelque temps Bordeaux, puis s’établit à La Haye, où sa grande fortune, son vaste savoir, sa générosité lui acquirent une grande considération et le mirent en relation avec les hommes politiques et les hommes de lettres les plus distingués. Le stathouder Guillaume IV consulta à plusieurs reprises Pinto sur des matières d’économie politique et de finances, et suivit ses conseils en réformant de graves abus. Lorsque, en 1748, le trésor public des Provinces-Unies fut épuisé par suite de la guerre, Isaac Pinto versa de grandes sommes pour venir en aide à sa patrie adoptive et contribua a sauver l’État. Après la mort du stathouder, il séjourna pendant plusieurs années à Paris et à Londres, et se lia avec plusieurs hommes éminents. (fr)
