Aquest premi és per a escrits d'entre 7.500 i 17.500 paraules, d'altres premis Hugo s'atorguen a novel·les, novel·les curtes i relats curts. Aquest premi s'ha atorgat anualment des del 1955 fins al 1959, del 1967 fins al 1969 i des del 1973 fins a l'actualitat per la World Science Fiction Society. A més d'aquests premis, i a partir del 1996 s'han atorgat els premis Restrospective Hugo (Hugo retrospectiu) pels anteriors 50, 75 o 100 anys anteriors. Fins al 2018, s'han atorgat premis retrospectius pels anys 1939, 1941, 1943, 1946, 1951 i 1954. Els nomenats i premiats son escollits pels membres de la convenció anual Worldcon. - The Hugo Award for Best Novelette is one of the Hugo Awards given each year for science fiction or fantasy stories published or translated into English during the previous calendar year. The novelette award is available for works of fiction of between 7,500 and 17,500 words; awards are also given out in the short story, novella and novel categories. The Hugo Awards have been described as "a fine showcase for speculative fiction" and "the best known literary award for science fiction writing". The Hugo Award for Best Novelette was first awarded in 1955, and was subsequently awarded in 1956, 1958, and 1959, lapsing in 1960. The category was reinstated for 1967 through 1969, before lapsing again in 1970; after returning in 1973, it has remained to date. In addition to the regular Hugo awards, beginning in 1996 Retrospective Hugo Awards, or "Retro Hugos", have been available to be awarded for 50, 75, or 100 years prior. Retro Hugos may only be awarded for years after 1939 in which no awards were originally given. To date, Retro Hugo awards have been given for novelettes for 1939, 1941, 1943–1946, 1951, and 1954. Hugo Award nominees and winners are chosen by supporting or attending members of the annual World Science Fiction Convention, or Worldcon, and the award presentation constitutes its central event. The selection process is defined in the World Science Fiction Society Constitution as instant-runoff voting with six nominees, except in the case of a tie. The novelettes on the ballot are the six most-nominated by members that year, with no limit on the number of stories that can be nominated. Initial nominations are made by members in January through March, while voting on the ballot of six nominations is performed roughly in April through July, subject to change depending on when that year's Worldcon is held. Prior to 2017, the final ballot was five works; it was changed that year to six, with each initial nominator limited to five nominations. Worldcons are generally held near the start of September, and are held in a different city around the world each year. During the 65 nomination years, 202 authors have had works nominated; 50 of these have won, including coauthors and Retro Hugos. 1 translator has been noted along with the author whose work she translated. Poul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, and Harlan Ellison both have received the most Hugos for Best Novelette at three, with Ellison having been nominated a total of six times, while seven other authors have won twice. Mike Resnick has had the most nominations at eight, and Ursula K. Le Guin and Greg Egan have been nominated seven times each. Las reglas de los premios Hugo determinan que en la categoría de mejor cuento o relato de extensión larga (novelette en inglés) compiten las obras de ficción con una longitud de entre 7500 y 17.500 palabras. Además existen premios Hugo para obras de ficción de otras extensiones como novelas, novelas cortas y relatos cortos. El premio Hugo al mejor relato se otorgó por primera vez en 1955 y continuó entregándose anualmente hasta 1959, con excepción del año 1958 en el cual la categoría fue compartida con la de mejor novela. Se restituyó entre los años 1967 a 1969 para finalmente entregarse cada año de forma ininterrumpida desde 1973. Hasta el año 2016 se han entregado estos premios retrospectivos en cinco ocasiones a las obras que hubiera correspondido galardonar en las ceremonias de 1939, 1941, 1946, 1951 y 1954. La selección tanto de los nominados como del ganador del premio al mejor relato se realiza —como en el caso del resto de los premios Hugo— por votación entre los asistentes a la Worldcon (Convención Mundial de Ciencia Ficción) de dicho año. Los relatos nominados son escogidos en una primera vuelta en la que todos aquellos con derecho a voto presentan su lista de nominados (sin límite respecto al número de obras que pueden nominar), y los cinco más votados —o más en caso de empates— pasan a formar parte de la papeleta de la votación final. En esta votación final el ganador es elegido por los mismos votantes mediante un sistema de voto preferencial. El ganador del premio al mejor relato es anunciado junto con el resto de ganadores de cada categoría en el acto de entrega de los premios Hugo que se celebra en la propia Convención. Hasta el año 2021 un total de 55 relatos de 45 autores distintos han recibido un premio Hugo en esta categoría. Poul Anderson y Harlan Ellison, con tres victorias cada uno, son los autores que lo han ganado en más ocasiones.
