  • George Raymond Richard Martin (Bayonne, New Jersey, 20 september 1948) is een Amerikaans schrijver van sciencefiction, fantasy en screenplays en filmproducent. Hij heeft journalistiek gedoceerd en is organisator geweest van schaaktoernooien. Martin schreef veel korte verhalen in de jaren 70 en won daarmee meerdere prijzen. De Hugo Award kreeg hij voor de novelle A Song for Lya in 1974, voor het korte verhaal The Way of Cross and Dragon in 1979 en voor de 'novelette' Sandkings in 1979, waarmee hij ook de Nebula Award won. Hij kreeg zijn tweede Nebula in 1985 voor de novelette Portraits of His Children. In 1988 ontving hij de World Fantasy Award voor de novelle The Skin Trade en de novelle Blood of the Dragon bezorge hem zijn vierde Hugo in 1997. Martin is ook de winnaar van zes Locus Awards, onder andere voor de eerste drie romans van A Song of Ice and Fire. Hoewel veel van zijn werk fantasy of horror is, hoort een aantal vroegere werken tot het SF genre. Vanaf 1986 werkte Martin voor televisie aan de nieuwe The Twilight Zone serie en aan Beauty and the Beast.
