- حْفَيْظ (بالإنجليزية Hufaidh): هي جزيرة خرافية تتداول أخبارها بين سكان أهوار جنوب العراق، ويعتقد أنها موجودة في مناطق المعدان أو عرب الأهوار. أكّد سكان الأهوار للرحّالة الإنجليزي ويلفريد ثيسيجر أنه: «يوجد فيها أماكن وأشجار نخيل وحدائق الرمان وجواميس يفوق حجمها حجم جواميسنا، لكن لا أحد يعلم بالضبط أين تقع... إن أي شخص يرى جزيرة حْفَيْظ سيكون ممسوساً وفيما بعد لا يمكن لأحد أن يعي كلماته... يقولون إن الجنَّ تستطيع إخفاء الجزيرة عن نواظر أي شخص يأتي بقربها» شارك آر. أس. أم. ستيرجز (ضابط سياسي في القرنة في عام 1920) ثيسيجر بوجود علاقة محتملة بين جزيرة حفيظ وجنة عدن المذكورة في النصوص المقدسة، فقد كتب ستيرجز عن الأسطورة المحلية قائلاً إنها:«جزيرة مفقودة محروسة في الأهوار تحمل ثمارًا لذيذةً. . . كانت الجزيرة في ليالٍ معينة تشع بالوهج البادي للعيان من على بعد أميال عديدة، وقد بدت أنها تتحرك كخيوط دخان كبيرة الحجم يستعصي على أحد أن يتعقبها رغم كل المحاولات. . . لقد رأيتها بأم عيني ذات مرة - يشع منها وهج ساطع منتشر حينما سقط ضياء البدر بمحاذاة الأفق مباشرة». قال مُضَيِّف ثيسيجر، صدّام، في وقت سابق إن «أحد أفراد عشيرة آل فرطوس قد رآها منذ سنوات، عندما كنت طفلاً. إنه كان يبحث عن جاموس له وعندما طفق راجعاً كان كلامه مشوشًا، وكنا نعلم أنه قد رأى حْفَيْظ». وأردف بالقول: "إن صيهود، وهو الشيخ الكبير لعشيرة آل بو محمد، كان قد بحث عن جزيرة حْفَيْظ بأسطول من المشاحيف في عهد العثمانيين، لكنه لم يجد شيئًا. عندما أدلى ثيسيجر ببعض التعليقات المتشككة نفى صدّام بشكل قاطع: «لا، صاحب، حْفيظ موجودة هناك حقاً. سَلْ أي شخص، سواء أكان من الشيوخ أو الحكومة، فالكل يعلم بأمر حْفيظ». هذه الجزيرة ربما تشبه قصتها قصة جزيرة البرازيل الأسطورية. - Hufaidh (Arabic: حفيظ): is a mythical island in the marshes of southern Iraq, believed to exist by the Ma'dan or Marsh Arabs. The Ma'dan informants of the traveller Wilfred Thesiger asserted that: on it are palaces, and palm trees and gardens of pomegranates, and the buffaloes are bigger than ours. But no one knows exactly where it is... anyone who sees Hufaidh is bewitched, and afterwards no one can understand his words...They say the Jinns can hide the island from anyone who comes near it. R. S. M. Sturges (Political Officer at Qurnah in 1920) shared with Thesiger a possible connection between Hufaidh and the biblical Garden of Eden. Sturges wrote about the local legend of “a lost island in the marshes bearing luscious fruits and guarded . . . On certain nights it shone with a radiance visible for many miles. It seemed to move like some out-size will-o'-the-wisp and eluded all attempts to track it down . . . I saw it myself once – a strong diffused glow as of the full moon just below the horizon.” Thesiger's host, Sadam, earlier related that “One of the Fartus saw it, years ago, when I was a child. He was looking for buffalo and when he came back his speech was all muddled up, and we knew he had seen Hufaidh." He further said, “Saihut, the great AIbu Muhammad sheikh, searched for Hufaidh with a fleet of canoes in the days of the Turks, but he found nothing. When Thesiger made some skeptical comment Sadam emphatically said, "No, Sahib, Hufaidh is there all right. Ask anyone, the sheikhs or the Government. Everyone knows about Hufaidh." The island is, perhaps, analogous to the Irish mythical island of Hy-Brazil. (en)
