Hondsrug té una longitud de 70 km i una alçada mitjana de 20 metres sobre el nivell del mar. Probablement van ser creats durant l'última glaciació. Està principalment localitzat en la província de Drenthe i en part en la província Groningen. L'esperó del Hondsrug a Groningen ha provocat la creació de diversos pobles construïts amb terp: Adorp, Sauwerd, Wetsinge, Winsum, Baflo, Rasquert, Warffum, Usquert, Rottum. En 2013, el Hondsrug ha estat reconegut per la UNESCO com el primer geoparc als Països Baixos. (ca)

- The Hondsrug (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɔntsrɵx]) is a Dutch ridge of sand that is mainly located in the province Drenthe and partly in the province Groningen. The spur of the Hondsrug in Groningen has led to the creation of various villages build on artificial dwelling hills: Adorp, Sauwerd, Wetsinge, Winsum, Baflo, , Warffum, Usquert, Rottum. The name "Hondsrug" would appear to be taken from the Dutch word for "dog" or "hound" (hond) and the word for a "back" or "ridge" (rug). However, it is more likely a bastardization of the older name Hunze-rug, coming from the name of the , which flows through Drenthe and Groningen. Up until the 19th century the Hondsrug was also known as the Bisschopsrug, meaning "Bishop's Ridge". The ridge has northwest–southeast orientation, which it shares with some less pronounced parallel ridges. These ridges are generally thought to be glacial landforms. It has been debated what kind of landform it should be, suggestions ranging from medial moraines to mega-flutes. (en)

Hij maakt deel uit van een groter geheel van zandruggen en stroomdalen in Drenthe en Groningen dat wel het Hondsrugsysteem wordt genoemd. De Hondsrug vormt, samen met een deel van het omringende gebied, het enige geopark van Nederland. De Hondsrug heeft een lengte van 70 kilometer en een gemiddelde hoogte van 20 meter boven NAP. Niettemin is het grootste deel van de Hondsrug slechts enkele meters hoger dan de omliggende 'dalen'. Het (toenmalige) dorp Groningen ontstond op het noordelijke uiteinde van de Hondsrug. De hoogste noordelijke 'heuvel', zo'n 9 meter boven NAP, is duidelijk te zien in de Herestraat. Vandaar dat de zijstraat op het hoogste punt heet. Nog iets noordelijker is een kleinere heuvel te vinden, op de top daarvan ligt de Nieuwe Kerk. De Hondsrug eindigt bij de Wilgenlaan in Groningen. De zuidelijkste top is het Haantjeduin bij Emmen, tegelijk met z'n 26,5 m boven NAP het hoogste natuurlijke punt van Drenthe. (nl)
