- Als Hor Trai (thailändisch หอไตร) bezeichnet man ein Bibliotheksgebäude in einem Wat, der buddhistischen Tempelanlage in Thailand. Jeder Raja Khana (Vorsteher eines Teils der Mönche, siehe: Kuti (Tempel)) besitzt seinen Hor Trai; hat ein Wat mehrere Raja Khana, so finden wir entsprechend viele Bibliotheksgebäude. Die Verwaltung eines Hor Trai obliegt dem Bannarak, dem Bibliothekar. Hor Trais können unterschiedliche Größen und Bauformen aufweisen. Die heiligen Schriften des Tripitaka wurden jahrhundertelang auf Palmblättern geschrieben. Da es schwer ist, die empfindlichen Palmblattbündel der Handschriften vor Feuchtigkeit und Termiten zu schützen, stellt man die Gebäude auf Pfähle, so dass der Raum mit den Bücherschränken etwa 3 m über dem Boden liegt. Wegen der Ameisen bevorzugt man Ziegelmauerwerk, mitunter verlegt man die Bibliothek sogar in künstlich angelegte Teiche. Die einzelnen Blätter einer heiligen Schrift, ungefähr 50 cm lang und 4 bis 6 cm breit, sind perforiert, sodass etwa 20 bis 40 Seiten mit einer Kordel aufgefädelt werden können. Das gesamte Werk wird zwischen zwei Teakholz-Brettern zusammengepresst und mit einem Tuch eingewickelt in besonderen Bücherschränken aufbewahrt. Diese Bücherschränke sind meistens künstlerisch ausgestaltet, mit Perlmutt-Intarsien oder Zeichnungen in Gold auf schwarzem Lack. Besonders gelungene Beispiele sind im Nationalmuseum in Bangkok zu bewundern. (de)
- A ho trai (Thai: หอไตร) is the library of a Thai Buddhist temple. A ho trai can come in different shapes and sizes. For many centuries, the sacred Tipiṭaka scriptures had been written on palm leaves. To preserve the scriptures against humidity and against termites, the library was often built on columns to raise the storage from the ground. Bricks were preferably used in constructions to battle termites. Sometimes the ho trai would be built, especially for this reason, above man-made ponds. Traditionally, the Tipiṭaka scriptures consisted of individual palm leaves, each measuring around 50 cm in length and around 4 to 6 cm in width. They were perforated and threaded in order to combine them in stacks of 20 to 40 pages. These stacks are kept pressed between two pieces of teakwood which is then wrapped in cloth and stored in a special bookcase. These bookcases are sometimes exquisitely crafted with mother-of-pearl inlay or with gold leaf applied on black lacquer. Beautiful examples of bookcases can be seen in the Bangkok National Museum. Modern Tipiṭaka are now printed as books. (en)
