Godbluff is the fifth album released by English progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. It was the first album after the band reformed in 1975 and was recorded after a European tour. As the first self-produced album by the band, it featured a tighter, more pared-down sound than the band's earlier recordings with producer John Anthony. Hammill said "we did not want to make 'Son of Pawn Hearts' with a big long side two and lots of studio experiments". Van der Graaf Generator would never work with an outside producer from this point forward. Hammill made extensive use of the Hohner Clavinet D6 keyboard, which he had first started using on his previous solo album, Nadir's Big Chance (1975).

Das Album beinhaltet vier Stücke: The Undercover Man und Scorched Earth auf der A-Seite sowie Arrow und The Sleepwalkers auf der B-Seite. Bei ihrem Comeback ging es die Band von Peter Hammill wesentlich ruhiger und weniger konfus an als noch vier Jahre zuvor bei Pawn Hearts. So beginnt The Undercover Man mit einer Flüsterpassage, begleitet von einem sehr ruhigen Intro, das sich langsam in einem Crescendo steigert. Hauptinstrumente sind Flöte, Hammond-Orgel und Schlagzeug mit ruhigem Beat. Saxophon und Gitarre kommen erst im Laufe des Stückes zum Einsatz. Inhaltlich handelt das Stück erneut von einer zurückgewiesenen Liebe, Hirngespinsten und (falscher) Hoffnung. Scorched Earth beginnt schon wesentlich gewaltiger mit Orgel, Keyboard, Saxophon und Schlagzeug, welche auch die Hauptinstrumente des Stücks sind. Inhaltlich geht es darum, wie man langsam den Verstand verliert und in die Falle des Irrsinns gerät. Arrow ist wieder ein recht ruhig beginnendes Stück; am Anfang spielen Schlagzeug und Bass, zu denen sich ziemlich schnell David Jacksons Saxophonspiel und Hammills stark verfremdetes Keyboard gesellt, bevor die erste Gesangspassage einsetzt. Schließlich steigert sich das Stück in einen musikalischen Hilfeschrei, wie man ihn von Pawn Hearts bereits kennt. Inhaltlich geht es um die Gefühle und Ängste eines Krieges, in dem man sich befindet. The Sleepwalkers startet ziemlich impulsiv mit Schlagzeug und Orgel, nach Beginn der Gesangspassage gesellt sich auch das Saxophon hinzu, das im weiteren Verlauf zum Hauptinstrument avanciert. Ein interessantes Element ist eine eingebaute „Tanzpassage“. Inhalt ist auch hier wieder der Traum von einer vergangenen Liebe, die es nie gegeben hat. Insgesamt ist Godbluff ein Werk, das von der Obskurität von Pawn Hearts wenig behalten hat. Die vier Stücke sind aber allesamt sehr solide, weshalb das Album von der Kritik als gelungenes Comeback bezeichnet wurde. Das Album wirkt düster, ist aber bei weitem nicht so anstrengend wie die Vorgänger, wodurch sich auch der große Erfolg erklären dürfte.
