The organization was founded in 1885 when Emperor Alexander III decreed that the Geological Survey of Finland (Suomen geologinen tutkimus) be established. Under centralen lyder även bland annat , invigt 1956, vars samlingar omfattar mineraler, bergarter, jordarter, malmer och fossil; där finns bland annat en av världens största samlingar av klotgraniter.
