- Freistadt (tschechisch Cáhlov) ist eine oberösterreichische Stadtgemeinde mit 7972 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Jänner 2022) im Unteren Mühlviertel und seit 1849 Sitz der Bezirkshauptmannschaft des Bezirkes Freistadt. Die Stadt liegt rund 38 Kilometer nordöstlich der Landeshauptstadt Linz und rund 17 Kilometer südlich der Staatsgrenze zu Tschechien. Freistadt wurde ab 1220 planmäßig angelegt und erlebte seine Blütezeit zwischen dem 14. und 16. Jahrhundert. Nach dem Dreißigjährigen Krieg verlor Freistadt sämtliche Privilegien aus der Gründungszeit. Daraus resultierte ein wirtschaftlicher Abschwung und im 19. Jahrhundert die Entwicklung zur Schul- und Verwaltungsstadt. In den beiden Weltkriegen fanden im Raum Freistadt keine kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen statt. Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs lag Freistadt in der sowjetischen Besatzungszone. Freistadt ist das schulische, kulturelle, medizinische und wirtschaftliche Zentrum des gleichnamigen Bezirks. Die gotische Altstadt mit der mittelalterlichen Stadtbefestigung, den Wehrtürmen und den barocken Fassaden der Bürgerhäuser zählt zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt. Freistadt ist eine der wenigen Städte in Österreich, deren Befestigungsanlagen fast vollständig erhalten sind. (de)
