Located at 100 Amsterdam Avenue between West 64th and 65th Streets, the school is operated by the New York City Department of Education, and resulted from the merger of the High School of Music & Art and the School of Performing Arts. The school has a dual mission of arts and academics, preparing students for a career in the arts or conservatory study as well as a pursuit of higher education. The school is the only one of New York City's nine specialized high schools to receive special funding from the New York State Legislature through the Hecht-Calandra Act, as well as the only specialized high school that does not use the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) as admissions criteria. The school in 2019–2020 had 3,011 students and 164 staff members, with a teacher–student ratio of 1:20. (en)

Szkoła powstała w 1984 roku z połączenia dwóch szkół o wieloletnich tradycjach: The High School of Music Art (1934) i High School of Performing Arts (1947). Celem szkoły jest przygotowanie uczniów do profesjonalnych karier w zakresie muzyki instrumentalnej, muzyki wokalnej, sztuki aktorskiej, sztuki tanecznej oraz sztuk plastycznych. Szkoła oferuje również przygotowanie do zawodów technicznych takich jak scenograf czy choreograf. Co roku szkoła otrzymuje kilkanaście tysięcy aplikacji, z czego wyłanianych jest około 600 uczniów, którzy mają możliwość rozpoczęcia nauki w LaGuardia High School w kolejnym roku szkolnym. Przesłuchania odbywają się zwykle w październiku – listopadzie każdego roku. Uczniowie starający się o przyjęcie do LaGuardii muszą zdać egzamin, który zwykle trwa około 3 godzin. Jako szkoła publiczna LaGuardia przyjmuje tylko uczniów będących rezydentami miasta Nowy Jork. Uczniowie LaGuardia, poza specjalnymi zajęciami studyjnymi w wybranej dziedzinie, przerabiają materiał nauczania normalnej szkoły średniej. W przypadku nie zaliczenia zajęć koserwatoryjnych lub studyjnych pozwala to absolwentom uzyskać dyplom ukończenia powszechnej szkoły średniej. (pl)
