- The fifth-wheel coupling provides the link between a semi-trailer and the towing truck, tractor unit, leading trailer or dolly. The coupling consists of a kingpin, a 2-or-3+1⁄2-inch-diameter (50.8 or 88.9 mm) vertical steel pin protruding from the bottom of the front of the semi-trailer, and a horseshoe-shaped coupling device called a fifth wheel on the rear of the towing vehicle. As the connected truck turns, the downward-facing surface of the semi-trailer (with the kingpin at the center) rotates against the upward-facing surface of the fixed fifth wheel, which does not rotate. To reduce friction, grease is applied to the surface of the fifth wheel. The configuration is sometimes called a turn-table in Australia and New Zealand, especially if it is a rotating ball-race-bearing type. The advantage of this type of coupling is towing stability. Some camper trailers also use a fifth-wheel configuration, with the coupling installed in the bed of a pickup truck as a towing vehicle; "fifth wheel" is therefore sometimes used as a synonym for such campers. - Een koppelschotel is een schotelvormige plaat, voorzien van een wigvormige sleuf, die op het chassis van een trekker (vrachtauto) wordt geplaatst en is bedoeld om een oplegger aan te koppelen. De oplegger is voorzien van een plaat met daarop een pen die men kingpin noemt. Door met de trekker achteruit onder de oplegger te rijden, wordt de kingpin via de sleuf in de koppelschotel gevoerd waarna een de kingpin borgt zodat de trekker de oplegger kan voortbewegen. De oplegger ligt, zoals de naam al doet vermoeden, op de koppelschotel, waarbij de kingpin het scharnierpunt vormt tussen trekker en oplegger. Om het scharnieren soepel te laten verlopen wordt de koppelschotel voorzien van een laag vet. - La ralla è una delle due parti relative all'accoppiamento meccanico ralla/perno tra un trattore stradale ed un semirimorchio per andare a costituire un autoarticolato. La ralla si trova sul trattore, mentre il perno si trova sul semirimorchio. È un sistema di aggancio più complesso e pesante di quello utilizzato dall'autotreno; infatti la ralla non solo deve trainare, ma deve anche sorreggere una parte notevole, circa un terzo, del carico posto nel semirimorchio. Ralla di un trattore stradale cosparsa di grasso È costituita da una robusta piastra d'acciaio con un foro centrale e un invito per il perno di articolazione disegnato a coda di rondine; in questo modo si rende possibile l'aggancio anche se il trattore e il semirimorchio non sono perfettamente allineati tra loro. La suddetta piastra è montata su un controtelaio, a sua volta vincolato al telaio del trattore stradale, in maniera tale da evitare eccessive sollecitazioni su di esso; gode di un limitato movimento di oscillazione rispetto al telaio del trattore, sia in senso trasversale sia in senso longitudinale, che serve ad affrontare dossi, cunette o semplici asperità del fondo stradale. Nei veicoli destinati ad utilizzi in fuoristrada, come i mezzi d'opera, vi sono alcuni tipi particolari di ralla che consentono di raggiungere notevoli angoli di oscillazione trasversale e longitudinale. - Siodło – element stanowiący połączenie ciągnika siodłowego, jako aktywnego środka transportu, z naczepą, będącą elementem biernym. Siodło pełni równocześnie funkcje sprzęgu i łożyska ślizgowego. Naciski wywierane na siodło zawierają się w przedziale od 5 do 36 ton. Jednakże zasadniczy zakres to 15–29 ton. Zastosowanie tego elementu pozwala na znaczną poprawę manewrowości całego zestawu naczepowego przy jednoczesnym zachowaniu wszelkich warunków bezpieczeństwa w trakcie użytkowania. Układ mocowania sprzęgu składa się ze sworznia królewskiego oraz zamka blokującego sworzeń w siodle.
