- Ferula foetida is a species of Ferula native to Central Asia (Kyzylkum Desert, Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan), Eastern Iran, western Afghanistan and western Pakistan. It is the most widely distributed species that produces asafoetida. It is often mistaken for the Southern Iranian species F. assa-foetida, for example, in Flora of the U.S.S.R. and Flora of Pakistan.

- Ferula foetida est une espèce de plantes à fleurs herbacées vivaces du genre Ferula, dans la famille des Apiacées. Elle est présente naturellement de l'Iran à l'Afghanistan et à l'ouest du Pakistan, et jusqu'aux plaines désertiques de l'Asie centrale. Sa racine pivotante produit une gomme-résine qu'on extrait sous le nom d'ase fétide et qui connait de nombreuses utilisations médicinales et culinaires. Il existe une importante confusion nomenclaturale liée à l'histoire taxonomique, longue et complexe, de la plante. La résine ase fétide reste ainsi associée dans un grand nombre d'ouvrages au nom scientifique Ferula assa-foetida, décrit par Linné à l'aube du système de nomenclature binominale. Le spécimen ayant servi à cette description appartient cependant à une espèce distincte, endémique du sud de l'Iran, et dont l'identité et la position phylogénétique exactes restent discutées. Ferula foetida est probablement l'espèce principale pour la production de la résine bien que celle d'autres férules soit parfois désignée aussi sous le nom d'ase fétide. Leur importance économique est cependant largement inférieure et leur composition phytochimique diffère. (fr)
