It is a sequel to William Friedkin's 1973 film The Exorcist based on the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty and the second installment of The Exorcist series. The film is set four years after the original film and centers on the now 16-year-old Regan MacNeil, who is still recovering from her previous demonic possession. A critical failure at the time of its release, Exorcist II is often considered to be the one of the worst films ever made. It was the last film to feature veteran actor Paul Henreid. Despite a good return at the box office, the negative reception meant that the next film in the Exorcist series would not come until The Exorcist III (written and directed by Blatty) in 1990, which ignored the events of the second film. En cualquier caso, el filme muestra una factura impresionante, consecuencia de su presupuesto de 14 millones de dólares (el más caro de la Warner hasta entonces), con una aclamada banda sonora a cargo de Ennio Morricone. Recaudó 30.749.142 dólares en Estados Unidos, una cifra muy inferior a la de la primera entrega, aunque suficiente para recuperar gastos y colocarse en el Top 20 de las más vistas de 1977. (es)
