- Dudley Ernest Littlewood (7 September 1903, London –6 October 1979, Llandudno) was a British mathematician known for his work in group representation theory. He read mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where his tutor was John Edensor Littlewood (they were not related). He was a lecturer at University College, Swansea from 1928 to 1947, and in 1948 took up the chair of mathematics at University College of North Wales, Bangor, retiring in 1970. He worked on invariant theory and group representation theory, especially of the symmetric group, often in collaboration with Archibald Read Richardson of Swansea. They introduced the immanant of a matrix, studied Schur functions and developed the Littlewood–Richardson rule for their multiplication. Littlewood was also interested in the application of representation theory to quantum mechanics. (en)

Danach war er Schullehrer und ab 1928 am University College in Swansea, wo er bis 1947 blieb und unter dem Einfluss von A. R. Richardson sich der Algebra, speziell der Invariantentheorie und der Theorie der Gruppencharaktere, zuwandte. Er studierte dazu die Arbeiten von Ferdinand Georg Frobenius und Issai Schur. 1934 wurde er dort Lecturer. 1947 war er kurz Lecturer in Cambridge und ab 1948 Professor am University College of North Wales in Bangor (Wales). 1970 ging er in den Ruhestand. Mit Richardson führte er 1934 spezielle symmetrische Funktionen (-Funktionen, von ihnen benannt nach Issai Schur) und die Littlewood-Richardson-Regel für ihre Multiplikation ein. Danach wurde Littlewood zum Experten für die Theorie der Charaktere der symmetrischen Gruppe. Er untersuchte auch Anwendungen der Darstellungen der symmetrischen Gruppe in der Quantenmechanik.
