- De gewone dophei (Erica tetralix) is een vaste plant uit de heidefamilie (Ericaceae). De plant komt voor op voedselarme, vochtige plaatsen, zoals zand-, moeras- en veengrond. De plant groeit zowel op zonnige als op schaduwrijke plaatsen, in duinvalleien en in bossen. De soort komt in Europa voor in de landen langs de Noordzee en de Oostzee. In Nederland komen in Drenthe nog grote heidevelden met gewone dophei voor, zoals in het Nationaal Park Dwingelderveld. Deze heidevelden kunnen alleen in stand gehouden worden door regelmatig plaggen, waardoor de grond schraal blijft. Vroeger staken de boeren hun heideplaggen het liefst op dopheidevelden en gebruikte de plaggen als stro in hun potstallen. Bij een wat rijkere grond treedt vergrassing op. Ook is verbraming een probleem. De plant is een dwergstruik, die 10-60 cm hoog kan worden. De soort bloeit van juni tot in oktober met roze-rode bloemen. (nl)
