- Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village on the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km northwest of the city of Medan, Bukit Lawang is known for the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan (around 5,000 orangutans occupying the area) and also the main access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park from the east side. The Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre for orangutans was founded in 1973. Its main purpose was to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting, trading and deforestation. The centre closed in 2002 as the place was getting too touristy and unsuitable for animal rehabilitation. A flash flood hit Bukit Lawang on 2 November 2003. The disaster destroyed the local tourist resorts and had a devastating impact to the local tourism industry in the area. Around 400 houses, 3 mosques, 8 bridges, 280 kiosks and food stalls, 35 hotels and guest houses were destroyed by the flood; 239 people including 5 tourists were killed, and around 1,400 locals lost their homes. Local authorities and an environmental NGO attributed it to illegal logging. Thanks to several international cooperation agencies, the site was rebuilt and re-opened again in July 2004. - Bukit Lawang is een bestuurslaag in het regentschap Langkat van de provincie Noord-Sumatra, Indonesië. Bukit Lawang telt 2642 inwoners (volkstelling 2010). Bukit Lawang is een belangrijke toeristische trekpleister, het heeft een reputatie als centrum van duurzaam- of ecotoerisme in een soort vorm van avontuurtoerisme. Het dorp trekt namelijk veel bezoekers die onder begeleiding van een natuurgids een 1 of meerdaagse maken in het Nationaal park Gunung Leuser. Dit grote beschermde natuurgebied strekt zich ten noordoosten van Bukit Lawang uit. Het is omstreden in hoeverre daadwerkelijk van ecotoerisme sprake is. Enerzijds is er dankzij de inkomsten uit het toerisme minder urgentie om nog meer jungle te vernietigen ten behoeve van palmolie-plantages, anderzijds verstoren toeristen de wilde dieren (wildlife) in het bijzonder de met uitsterven bedreigde orang-oetan. Bukit Lawang é conhecida por ter o maior santuário animal de orangotangos-de-sumatra (cerca de 5000 orangotangos) e também por ser o principal ponto de acesso ao Parque Nacional de Gunung Leuser. O centro de resgate e reabilitação de Bukit Lawang foi fundado em 1973. O principal objetivo é preservar as populações de orangotangos-de-sumatra da caça ilegal, negociação e desmatamento. Uma enchente atingiu Bukit Lawang em 2 de novembro de 2003. O desastre destruíu os resorts locais e teve um impacto devastador para a indústria de turismo local na área. Foram destruídas cerca de 400 casas, 3 mesquitas, 8 pontes, 280 quiosques/barracas de comida e cerca de 35 hóteis e Guesthouses. Para além disso morreram 239 pessoas (dos quais 5 eram turistas) e cerca de 1400 moradores perderam as suas casas. Graças a diversas agências de cooperação internacional, o local foi reconstruído e reaberto em julho de 2004. (pt)
