- Buddhism is a legally recognized religion in Austria. Although still small in absolute numbers (10,402 at the 2001 census), Buddhism in Austria enjoys widespread acceptance. A majority of Buddhists in the country are Austrian nationals (some of them naturalized after immigration from Asia, predominantly from the People's Republic of China and Vietnam), while a considerable number of them are foreign nationals. As in most European countries, different branches and schools of Buddhism are represented by groups of varying sizes. Vienna not only has the largest number of foreign residents, but is also the place with the longest tradition of Buddhism in the country. Most of Austria's Buddhist temples and centres of practice can be found there; some with a specific Chinese, Vietnamese, Tibetan or Japanese appearance. The latest development has been the establishment of a “Buddhist Cemetery” around a stupa-like building for funeral ceremonies at the Vienna Central Cemetery. Buddhism was officially recognized under Austrian law in 1983. Russia is the only other European country to recognize Buddhism formally as "native" to its own soil, giving it official status, along with Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. (en)
- Il buddhismo in Austria è una delle religioni legalmente riconosciute, seguita da oltre 10.000 persone; anche se ancora costituisce un piccolo in termini assoluti, esso gode di una diffusa accettazione. La maggioranza dei buddhisti nel paese sono cittadini austriaci (alcuni dei quali naturalizzati a seguito della loro immigrazione dall'Asia, in prevalenza dalla repubblica popolare cinese e dal Vietnam), mentre un numero considerevole di loro rimane di cittadinanza straniera. Come accade anche nella maggior parte degli altri paesi europei, i diversi rami e le scuole del buddhismo vengono rappresentati da gruppi di varie dimensioni. Vienna non solo ha il maggior numero di residenti stranieri, ma è anche il luogo con la più lunga tradizione di buddhismo nel paese; la maggior parte dei templi e dei centri di pratica della filosofia buddhista in Austria si possono trovare lì: alcune nella loro specificità di buddhismo cinese, altre negli aspetti di buddhismo vietnamita, buddhismo tibetano o infine buddhismo giapponese. L'ultimo sviluppo è stata l'istituzione di un "cimitero buddhista" attorno ad un edificio-stupa ove vengono svolte le cerimonie funebri, il tutto presso lo Zentralfriedhof, il cimitero centrale viennese. Il buddhismo è stato ufficialmente riconosciuto ai sensi del diritto austriaco nel 1983, ed è rimasto per molto l'unico paese europeo (assieme alla Russia) a riconoscere tale fede come nativa del proprio territorio. - Buddhism är en minoritetsreligion i Österrike. Det största religiösa samfundet i landet är Romersk-katolska kyrkan. I dagens Österrike finns det cirka 10 000 buddhister. Sedan 1983 har buddhismen erkänts som en officiell religion i Österrike. Samma år grundades (tyska Österreichische Buddhistische Religionsgesellschaft) som fungerar som paraplyorganisation för lokala organisationer. Sällskapet hör till Europeiska Buddhistiska Unionen. var en av de första österrikare som forskade i buddhism och var den förste som översatte palikanonen till tyska i slutet av 1800-talet. De första buddhistiska sällskapen etablerades efter andra världskriget. År 2012 hindrades ett buddhistiskt samfund från att bygga ett tempel i Gföhl. Projektet var finansierat av privata personer och byns borgmästare tillsammans med den lokala katolska kyrkan var inte emot det. Byborna krävde dock en folkomröstning om saken och röstade ned projektet med 67 procents majoritet. (sv)
