- Robert Gutowski (San Pedro, 25 d'abril de 1935 - 2 d'agost de 1960), sovint conegut com a Bob Gutowski, va ser un atleta estatunidenc, especialista en el salt de perxa, que va competir durant la dècada de 1950. El 1956 va prendre part en els Jocs Olímpics d'Estiu de Melbourne, on va guanyar la medalla de plata en la prova del del programa d'atletisme. Finalitzà rere el seu comptriota Bob Richards. Gutowski va poder prendre part en aquests Jocs per la renúncia de Jim Graham, ja que havia finalitzat en quarta posició en les proves classificatòries pels Jocs. En el seu palmarès també destaca el campionat de la NCAA de 1956 i 1957 i l'indor de l'AAU de 1958. El 27 d'abril de 1957 va establir un nou rècord mundial del salt de perxa amb 4,78 metres. Aquell mateix estiu va saltar 4,82 metres, però el salt no fou validat per la IAAF perquè un oficial va agafar la perxa mentre es dirigia cap a la barra. Els 4,78 metres es van mantenir com a rècord del món fins al 2 de juliol de 1960, quan va saltar 4,80 metres. Va morir en un accident de cotxe l'agost de 1960, quan sols tenia 25 anys. (ca)
- Robert Allen "Bob" Gutowski (25 April 1935 – 2 August 1960) was an American athlete who competed mainly in the pole vault. He competed for the United States in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia in the Pole Vault where he won the silver medal behind Bob Richards' second consecutive gold medal, after finishing fourth in the US Olympic Trials and only getting to the games on the withdrawal of Jim Graham. He attended Occidental College in Los Angeles where he won the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 1956 (tied) and 1957. He set the World Record in the pole vault on April 27, 1957. Later in 1957 he cleared the highest height ever cleared with a "straight" pole at 15'9.75" though that mark was never ratified as a World Record because the pole passed under the bar. In 1980, Bob Gutowski was inducted into the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Occidental College Track and Field Hall of Fame. He was killed in a head-on collision by a drunk driver at Camp Pendleton on 2 August 1960 while serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserves. (en)

August 1960 in Camp Pendleton, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Stabhochspringer polnischer Herkunft, der in der zweiten Hälfte der 1950er Jahre erfolgreich war. Er sprang Weltrekord und gewann eine olympische Silbermedaille. Der gelernte Industrie-Chemiker war Angehöriger der Marine Corps im Rang eines Leutnants. Erstmals auf sich aufmerksam machte er 1956 bei einem Meeting in Los Angeles, wo er 4,60 m sprang und dem Olympiasieger von 1952, Bob Richards, nur aufgrund der größeren Zahl an Versuchen (Richards war erst bei 4,52 m eingestiegen) unterlag. Im November desselben Jahres bei den Olympischen Spielen in Melbourne lautete die Reihenfolge genauso: Gutowski gewann mit 4,53 m Silber hinter Richards, der 4,56 m sprang. Berühmt machte ihn indessen sein Weltrekordsprung über 4,78 m, mit dem er am 27. April 1957 den 15 Jahre alten Weltrekord von Cornelius Warmerdam um 1 Zentimeter übertraf. Im Juni desselben Jahres meisterte er sogar 4,82 m, aber da der Stab unter der Latte durch fiel, was damals als regelwidrig galt, konnte diese Leistung nicht als Weltrekord anerkannt bleiben. Am 2. August 1960 fiel Robert Gutowski einem Autounfall zum Opfer. (de)

Był to pierwszy rekord świata osiągnięty przy użyciu tyczki aluminiowej (dotychczasowe uzyskiwano za pomocą tyczek bambusowych). Zginął tragicznie w wypadku samochodowym.
