- Die Birbynė ist eine in Litauen gespielte Hornpfeife mit einem Einfachrohrblatt. Das früher aus einem Pflanzenrohr mit einem idioglotten Rohrblatt bestehende, diatonische Volksmusikinstrument wurde im 20. Jahrhundert zu einem chromatischen Blasinstrument entwickelt, das in der klassischen Musik verwendet wird. Es gibt Instrumente unterschiedlicher Größe für die Sopran-, Tenor- und Kontrabasslage. Neben der Kastenzither kanklės (in Finnland kantele) gilt sie in Litauen als Nationalinstrument. - A birbynė is a Lithuanian aerophone that can be either single or double-reeded and may or may not have a mouthpiece. Birbynė can be made of a variety of materials: wood, bark, horn, straw, goose feather, etc. The earliest and simplest examples were used by children as playtoys and by shepherds as a tool to control the herd. In the 19th century, influenced by classical instruments and especially the clarinet, the birbynė evolved into a serious musical instrument used in ensembles. Modern birbynės are made of wood with bells of horn and usually have ten tone holes. They are divided by pitch range into three categories: soprano, tenor, and contrabass. (en)

Il en existe de différentes tailles pour les registres soprano, ténor et contrebasse. C'est avec le l'instrument national. Du point de vue de sa facture, elle s'apparente au chalumeau, au tárogató et à la clarinette. Le terme birbynė est employé pour la première fois en 1747 dans la littérature (Ruigys). Il s'agissait à l'origine d'un terme plus général désignant des instruments à anche de différents types. Пастухами изготавливался из дерева, коры, рога, соломины, гусиных перьев.В XIX в., под влиянием классических инструментов, таких, как кларнет, бирбине был усложнен и используется при исполнении профессиональной музыки. Современный бирбине изготавливается из дерева, на нижний конец надевается роговой раструб. Длина ствола инструмента — около 200 мм. На его корпусе проделано 4 и более игровых отверстий. В верхний конец ствола инструмента вставляется мундштук с одинарной или двунарной тростью. Звучание инструмента резкое, звукоряд диатоничный с квартовым скачком внизу.
