La derrota corsa va obrir als granaders francesos la ruta cap a Corte, capital de la Nació de Còrsega, i posà fi a la seva independència. Voltaire, al seu Siècle de Louis XV (1751), va escriure, meravellat, en ocasió del combat : «L'arma principal dels Corsos és el seu coratge. Aquest coratge fou tan gran que en un dels combats, vora un riu anomenat Golo, van fer una rampa amb els seus morts per a tenir temps de carregar, i els ferits també s'hi posaren per tal de reforçar-lo. Hom ha trobat valor arreu, però només s'ha vist aquestes accions en els pobles lliures.» El pont genovès que travessa el dos marges del riu Golo a , lloc de l'enfrontament directe entre les tropes de Paoli, formada per corsos i mercenaris prussians, i l'exèrcits francesos auxiliats amb nombrosos combatents corsos de Boccheciampe d'Oletta, fou destruït durant la Segona Guerra Mundial. - The Battle of Ponte Novu took place on May 8 and 9, 1769 between royal French forces under the Comte de Vaux, a seasoned professional soldier with an expert on mountain warfare on his staff, and the native Corsicans under . It was the battle that effectively ended the fourteen-year-old Corsican Republic and opened the way to annexation by France the following year. The Corsican commander-in-chief, Pasquale Paoli, was trying to raise troops in the vicinity but was not present in person. He trusted the defence to his second-in-command, Salicetti. His forces included a company of Corsican women under a female captain named Serpentini. Ponte Novu is a Genovese bridge over the river Golo in north central Corsica in Castello-di-Rostino commune. The battle opened the route through the rugged mountains to the Corsican capital of Corte. The battle is important as it marked the end of the Corsican War and paved the way for the incorporation of Corsica into France. Voltaire, in his Précis du Siècle de Louis XV, admiringly wrote about the battle: "The principal weapon of the Corsicans was their courage. This courage was so great that in one of these battles, near a river named Golo, they made a rampart of their dead in order to have the time to reload behind them before making a necessary retreat; their wounded were mixed among the dead to strengthen the rampart. Bravery is found everywhere, but such actions aren't seen except among free people." (en)

Der französische König Louis XV. hatte Korsika von den Genuesen erworben; der Besitz wurde durch den Sieg in dieser Schlacht gesichert. Rund um den gebrochenen Brückenbogen der Ponte Novu gestalten die Einwohner von Ponte Novu an jedem Jahrestag der Schlacht eine Gedenkzeremonie. Guidati dai granatieri francesi per la strada di Corte, capitale della nazione corsa, questa battaglia sancisce la fine della seconda e ultima fase della guerra in Corsica tra truppe francesi e indipendentisti. Il ponte genovese che collega le due rive del Golo a Ponte Nuovo, fu il luogo dove si confrontarono le truppe francesi e quelle paoliste composte dai corsi e dai mercenari prussiani, dopo che le armate francesi avevano rallentato l'avanzata dei corsi a Boccheciampe d'Oletta. Il ponte fu distrutto dai tedeschi in ritirata durante la Seconda guerra mondiale. Tuttora rimane un forte evento simbolico per i corsi e per i nazionalisti.
