- The term baroque horse describes a group of horse breeds, usually descended from and retaining the distinctive characteristics of a particular type of horse that rose to prominence in Europe during the Baroque era, after significant development throughout the Middle Ages. It describes the type of agile but strong-bodied descendants of horses in the Middle Ages such as the destrier. Specific ancestors of this type include the Neapolitan horse, and the Iberian horse of Barb ancestry known in the Middle Ages as the Spanish Jennet. They are characterized by powerful hindquarters, a muscular, arched neck, a straight or slightly convex profile, and usually a full, thick mane and tail. These horses are particularly well suited for the haute ecole discipline of classical dressage. Modern breeds considered of baroque type include the following:

* Friesian
* Ginetta
* Kladruber
* Lipizzan
* Lusitano
* Menorquín
* Murgese Assorted crossbreds developed from these breeds also may attain breed status over time as they develop a breed registry and other indicia of purebred status. Historically, the destrier was a war horse. In the Renaissance its descendants became trained in the haute ecole discipline of classical dressage. In the modern world, these horses are still seen in modern dressage and continue to perform haute ecole in venues such as the Spanish Riding School and the Cadre Noir. Le razze equine rientranti in questa categoria discendono da animali che nel Medioevo venivano utilizzati come destrieri da guerra. A partire dal Rinascimento, complice il miscuglio con cavalli iberici come il , i destrieri vennero trasformati in cavalli più agili ed eleganti, come il cavallo napoletano. Le razze equine odierne rientranti nella categoria del cavallo barocco sono l'Andaluso (vero e proprio archetipo), il Lipizzano (molto nota come razza barocca grazie alla "Scuola di Equitazione Spagnola" di Vienna), il Frisone, il Ginetta, il Murgese, il Lusitano, il , il Knabstrup, il e la razza Menorquina. - Een barokpaard (ook wel geschreven barok paard, waarbij barok een bijvoeglijk naamwoord is) is een paard met een bouw zoals die in de vroegmoderne tijd als ideaal werd gezien. Vaak gaat het om rassen wier geschiedenis met stamboeken tot in de zeventiende eeuw (of nog verder terug) bekend is. Het barokpaard is een warmbloedpaard, maar verschilt van modernere warmbloedtypes door een niet al te grote stokmaat (in de baroktijd vaak tussen 1,50 m en 1,60 m), een relatief korte rug (de paarden zien er iets gedrongener uit), en een ietwat bol profiel (in tegenstelling tot het rechte profiel van warmbloedpaarden). Barokpaarden zijn relatief vaak zwart of schimmel. Barokpaarden kunnen hun afstamming gewoonlijk terugvoeren op Iberische paarden, in het bijzonder de Andalusiër, die vóór de opkomst van de volbloedrassen als het edelste paard van Europa werd beschouwd. Recent genetisch onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat de Andalusiër en verwante rassen sterk zijn beïnvloed door de Berber. Hierom zou men barokpaarden 'warmbloed' kunnen noemen. Het verschil met de 'gewone' warmbloedrassen is dat de kruising tussen westerse en oosterse paarden hier al in de middeleeuwen plaatsvond, vóórdat er stamboeken van werden aangelegd. Barokpaarden worden tot op de dag van vandaag gefokt en worden gebruikt voor het klassieke hogeschoolrijden. Ook in de moderne dressuursport wordt dit type paarden gebruikt.
