- Balonová pošta je dnes komerční, filatelistickou záležitostí, ovšem v 19. století byla používána před nástupem pošty letecké zejména ve válečných dobách. Jako příliš závislá na povětrnostních podmínkách a tedy nespolehlivá využívána často nebyla. (cs)
- Balloon mail is the transport of mail (usually for weight reasons in the form of a postcard) carrying the name of the sender by means of an unguided hydrogen or helium filled balloon. Since the balloon is not controllable, the delivery of a balloon mail is left to good fortune; often the balloon and postcard are lost. A found balloon should be returned to the sender (by conventional post) with an indication of the discovery site, so that the sender can determine how far their balloon flew. Frequently balloon mail is sent as part of a balloon competition. Historically, balloons were used to transport mail from Paris during the Siege of Paris of 1870-71. About 66 unguided mail balloons were released from Paris to communicate with the outside world, of which the great majority succeeded in delivering their cargo. As the Prussian forces surrounded the city, telegraph lines were cut and messengers were captured, shot or turned back. Two services were proposed, by ballon monté (manned balloon) and ballon non-monté (unmanned). In practice only manned flights were used. After the siege, Anglo-French scientist Dr Pierre Wesby travelled to Burton-on-Trent, where in 1873 he started a business to transport mail across the Irish Sea to Dublin, from England. It is not known how this venture turned out; the records of Wesby's company were lost in 1916, when a bomb from the Zeppelin L 19 destroyed them. In 1877, a 5-cent stamp for balloon postage was privately printed in Nashville, Tennessee to carry mail on a June 18 flight of the "Buffalo Balloon" from that city to Gallatin, Tennessee. Of the three hundred stamps produced, only 23 were used. Balloon mail was sent from Przemyśl, Poland (near the Ukrainian border) during World War I. Balloon mail has been used for spreading information and propaganda materials, in particular for spreading propaganda to the population in countries with dictatorial governments. A balloon can be released from outside the sphere of influence of these governments and, wind permitting, can travel several hundred kilometers. This method of balloon mail has been used by private activists to distribute leaflets to Warsaw Pact countries from West Germany in the mid-1950s; and by South Koreans to North Korea discussing the health of their leader, Kim Jong-il. In der einfachen Variante sind es Faltbriefe, Briefe oder Karten mit Absender, die von ungelenkten Ballonen mit unbekanntem Ziel losgeschickt werden. Für die Philatelie sind regulär beschriftete und frankierte Sendungen interessant, die den ersten Teil ihres Weges mit einem bemannten Ballon zurücklegen und am Landeort bei der Post zur Weiterversendung übergeben werden. Infolge ihrer Abhängigkeit von den Windverhältnissen kamen Ballons für Zwecke einer regelmäßigen Postbeförderung niemals in Frage. (de)

L'histoire des ballons montés ne dure que quatre mois et demi, entre le 23 septembre 1870 et le 28 janvier 1871, durant lesquels 67 ballons s'échappent de la capitale encerclée. Les départs se faisaient de jour comme de nuit, essuyant les tirs de barrage des troupes prussiennes. On estime le nombre de plis, de lettres, de dépêches qui ont été transportés entre 2 500 000 et 3 000 000. (fr)

Il ballon monté fu anche un pallone con equipaggio utilizzato dai francesi durante l'assedio di Parigi del 1871, per portare all'esterno della zona assediata persone e comunicazioni scritte. Tra quelli che utilizzarono questo mezzo di comunicazione ci fu il politico francese Léon Gambetta. (it)
- Ballonpost zijn poststukken die per luchtballon zijn vervoerd. Enerzijds gaat het om post die met een bemande luchtballon wordt vervoerd, vaak filatelische stukken. Anderzijds post die met een onbemande ballon wordt vervoerd. Vooral bij een onbemande ballon is het maar afwachten waar zo'n ballon terechtkomt. (nl)
- Poczta balonowa – jeden z rodzajów poczty powietrznej. Transport przesyłek pocztowych odbywa się za pomocą wolnych balonów. Przesyłki z miejsca lądowania balonu dostarcza się do najbliższego urzędu pocztowego, skąd są one następnie wysyłane do adresatów. Pierwsza poczta została przetransportowana balonem 7 stycznia 1785 roku. Był to przelot z Dover do Francji w pobliże Calais. Podczas pierwszego lotu balonowego w Stanach Zjednoczonych z Filadelfii do Deptford (New Jersey), Jean-Pierre Blanchard przewiózł prywatny list od Jerzego Waszyngtona do dowolnego właściciela posiadłości, na której wyląduje Blanchard. Było to pierwsze dostarczenie listu lotniczego w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Ze względu jednak na liczne problemy związane z tego rodzaju transportem (m.in. przypadkowy kierunek lotu balonu, ograniczona pojemność), balony nie były używane do masowego regularnego przewozu poczty. Z historii znane są jednak przypadki używania balonów w tym celu, np. we wrześniu 1870 w czasie wojny francusko-pruskiej – do przewozu przesyłek z oblężonego Paryża. Obecnie przewóz przesyłek pocztowych balonami odbywa się tylko podczas lotów pokazowych, przy okazji zawodów balonowych, itp. (poczty specjalne) – przesyłki takie mają dodatkowe nalepki, stemple, itp. informujące o rodzaju poczty. W Polsce pierwszy raz przewieziono przesyłki pocztowe przy pomocy wolnych balonów w 1926 roku. W okresie międzywojennym polskie balony 20-krotnie zabierały na swe pokłady listy i kartki pocztowe nadawane głównie przez filatelistów. (pl)
