En 1948 aún sin oficializarse como club de fútbol tuvo un año de activa participación de manera "amateur" en el ámbito local.​ Su máximo logro futbolístico: dos títulos de la Primera B en 1995 y 2015. Al llegar del descenso logró el título del Torneo Adecuación 1996-97 ante Deportes Quindío, sin que este sea reconocido oficialmente como título colombiano. En la serie definitiva el club perdió con el América de Cali y al resultar subcampeón, el club bumangués clasificó a la Copa Libertadores de América en fase de Grupos de 1998. Su clásico rival es Cúcuta Deportivo jugando así el Clásico del Oriente Colombiano. Desde su descenso en la segunda temporada del año 2008, el Atlético Bucaramanga disputó la Categoría Primera B, segunda división del fútbol profesional colombiano. Para la temporada 2016, regresó a la Primera División del fútbol colombiano tras 7 años de ausencia. En diciembre de 2016 se funda el equipo profesional de mujeres, Atlético Bucaramanga Femenino para disputar las competiciones de la Liga Femenina.​ (es)
