- Der Fünfkampf ist eine Disziplin der Leichtathletik, bei der fünf Einzelwettkämpfe in verschiedenen Disziplinen ausgetragen werden. Deren Ergebnisse werden nach einer Punktetabelle umgerechnet, die sich am jeweiligen Weltrekord orientiert. Sieger wird der Teilnehmer, der die höchste Punktesumme aus allen fünf Teildisziplinen erreicht hat. Typisch für den Fünfkampf ist die Betonung der Vielseitigkeit, da meist Sprung-, Wurf- und Laufdisziplinen kombiniert werden. Es gibt jedoch auch spezialisiertere Formate, wie zum Beispiel den Werfer-Fünfkampf. In den kombinierten Freiluftwettbewerben dominiert bei den Männern der Zehnkampf und bei den Frauen der Siebenkampf. Trotzdem werden weiterhin Wettkämpfe und zum Teil auch Meisterschaften im Fünfkampf ausgetragen. In Hallenwettkämpfen der Frauen wird seit 1985 der Fünfkampf durchgeführt, bestehend aus 60-Meter-Hürdenlauf, Hochsprung, Kugelstoßen, Weitsprung und 800-Meter-Lauf. Die Wettbewerbe in allen Disziplinen werden innerhalb eines Tages ausgetragen. Der hier beschriebene Fünfkampf darf nicht mit dem „modernen Fünfkampf“ verwechselt werden. (de)

D'abord uniquement masculine au début du XXe siècle et se déroulant en un jour (comme Jim Thorpe en 1912 avec comme épreuves le saut en longueur, lancer du javelot, 200 m, lancer du disque et 1 500 m), elle est devenue quasi uniquement une épreuve d'athlétisme féminin en salle, comprenant cinq épreuves. Le mot pentathlon provient de la racine grecque penta (cinq) et athlon (compétition). Ce pentathlon est donc devenu une variante de l'heptathlon féminin, disputée en salle, où l'espace disponible ne permet pas à certaines épreuves d'être organisées (le lancer du javelot, par exemple). Les compétitrices cumulent des points calculés à partir des performances obtenues dans chacune des épreuves. Une fois toutes les épreuves terminées, la gagnante est celle qui a le plus de points. Nella sua versione outdoor ha fatto parte del programma olimpico femminile dal 1964 al 1980, in seguito sostituito dall'eptathlon. Ne esiste una versione indoor, sempre esclusivamente femminile, che si disputa abitualmente nelle competizioni internazionali di atletica leggera. In passato, nella sua versione outdoor, è stata disciplina olimpica anche al maschile, comparendo nel programma dei Giochi olimpici dal 1912 al 1924, seppur con una diversa composizione delle singole prove.
