- Apicius war ein römischer Feinschmecker. Der ausschweifende Luxus seiner Gelage und Schmausereien wurde in den 90er Jahren des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. von niemandem in Rom übertroffen.Nach Poseidonios veranlasste Apicius die Verbannung von Publius Rutilius Rufus, einem Historiker, der für die Einfachheit seiner Tafel bekannt war. Apicius war offenbar kein Gentilname, sondern ein Beiname, den auch zwei weitere römische Feinschmecker trugen, nämlich Marcus Gavius Apicius und ein weiterer Apicius des 2. Jahrhunderts. Ob dieser Name durch ihn die Bedeutung „Feinschmecker“ erhielt oder schon vorher eine entsprechende Bedeutung hatte, ist nicht ganz klar. Denkbar ist „Kahlkopf“ als Bedeutung des Spitznamens (von apica „Schaf, das am Bauch keine Wolle hat“ und apiciosus „Kahlkopf“). (de)
- Apicius is the name of a Roman lover of luxury who lived in the 90s BC and was said to have outdone all his contemporaries in lavish expenditure. According to Poseidonius, Apicius was responsible for the banishment from Rome of Rutilius Rufus, who was the author of a history of Rome written in Greek and was notable for the modesty of his entertaining. As Tertullian observes, this early Apicius gave his name to a series of later gourmets and cooks, notably Marcus Gavius Apicius and a slightly later Apicius who lived in the 2nd century AD. Apicius was not transmitted as a family name, but was apparently applied as a nickname, meaning "gourmand". For the same reason, the name of Apicius was eventually thought appropriate for a cookbook, and as such was applied both to the late Roman cookery text currently known as Apicius and to the quite different and much briefer Excerpta Apicii ("Abridged Apicius") ascribed to Vinidarius. Son existence est attestée par Athénée, dans son Banquet des sophistes (IV, 66), citant Posidonius : « Parmi les Romains, on rapporte, d'après ce qu'en dit Posidonius au 49e livre de ses Histoires, qu'il y avait un homme du nom d'Apicius qui dépassa tous les autres hommes pour ce qui est de l'intempérance. C'est cet Apicius qui fut la cause du bannissement de Rutilius, l'auteur d'une Histoire des Romains en grec. Quant à l'Apicius qui fut lui aussi déconsidéré à cause de son intempérance, nous en avons déjà parlé au livre I . » Dans cette dernière phrase, Athénée évoque un autre Apicius bien plus connu (Marcus Gavius Apicius), contemporain de l'empereur Tibère. Il est curieux que deux homonymes aient laissé le même souvenir. Publius Rutilius Rufus, dont son contemporain Apicius aurait provoqué le bannissement, on ne sait pourquoi, fut banni de Rome en 92 av. J.-C.. On ne peut pas non plus savoir comment se manifestait exactement l'« intempérance » (ἀσωτία) de cet Apicius : le passage d'Athénée donne des exemples de prodigalité effrénée. (fr)

Secondo Posidonio, Apicio fu responsabile dell'esilio di Publio Rutilio Rufo, autore di una storia di Roma in greco e famoso per la modestia dei suoi divertimenti. Come nota Tertulliano, egli diede il suo nome a una serie di gastronomi e ricettari a lui posteriori, tra i quali spiccano Marco Gavio Apicio e un Apicio vissuto nel II secolo. Il nome "Apicio" non era trasmesso come cognome, ma apparentemente usato come soprannome col significato di "goloso". Per la stessa ragione il nome "Apicio" fu ritenuto appropriato per un ricettario e applicato al testo tardo-latino noto come Apicio e agli Excerpta Apicii attribuiti a Vinidario. (it)
