- Angels of Light, manchmal auch The Angels of Light, waren eine US-amerikanische Rockband aus New York. Gründer und einziges ständiges Mitglied war Michael Gira, ehemaliger Bandleader der ebenfalls aus New York stammenden, einflussreichen Noise-Rock-Band Swans. Nach Auflösung der Swans 1997 und dem kurzlebigen Projekt The Body Lovers/The Body Haters rief Gira die Angels of Light ins Leben. Ursprünglich wollte Gira die Band "The Pleasure Seekers" nennen. Diese Idee wurde auf Eis gelegt als sich herausstellte, dass es in den 1960ern bereits eine Band dieses Namens gab. Die ersten zwei Live-Auftritte wurden noch schlicht als "Michael Gira with guests" angekündigt. Alle Alben der Angels of Light werden auf Giras eigenem Label Young God Records verlegt. Anders als die oft dunklen Noise-Rock-Klänge der Swans lag der Schwerpunkt von Giras neuer Band auf melodiösen Kompositionen mit Einflüssen aus Folk-, Psychedelic- und Progressive-Rock. Angels of Light kollaborierten mit Musikern und Bands wie Dana Schechter von Bee And Flower, Kid Kongo Powers von The Cramps, Julia Kent, aka Toby Dammit, Thor Harris von den Swans und Shearwater, Cassis Birgit Staudt sowie der Indie-Band aus Brooklyn. Auch der Freakfolk-Musiker Devendra Banhart, welcher anfangs ebenfalls bei Young God Records verlegt wurde, spielte mit den Angels of Light zusammen. 2009 löste Gira die Angels of Light auf, nachdem er beschlossen hatte, die Swans wieder ins Leben zu rufen. Viele Songs des Comeback-Albums My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky (2010) waren ursprünglich als Angels-of-Light-Lieder gedacht. (de)
- Angels of Light were an American folk band that was formed circa 1998 by singer-songwriter and musician Michael Gira after he disbanded Swans, the group he had founded in 1982. The band has marked a distinctly different style for Gira since he left Swans, most noticeably being musically more melodic and less brutal than his previous efforts and with emphasis on acoustic instruments and folk and country influences. Before the band was formed, Gira intended to call his post-Swans acoustic/song-based project The Pleasure Seekers. This name was discarded because there had been a group with the same name in the 1960s. The first two live performances of what would become the Angels of Light (the Tonic/Bowery Ballroom benefit shows) were billed as "Michael Gira with guests". The revolving lineup up Angels of Light included a wide range of musicians from New York City and elsewhere, including Dana Schechter of Bee and Flower, Kid Congo Powers of The Cramps, Larry Mullins (a.k.a. Toby Dammit), Cassis Birgit Staudt of b-blush, Bliss Blood of The Moonlighters, Thor Harris of Shearwater, Swans guitarist Christoph Hahn, Phil Puleo of Cop Shoot Cop, and freak-folk musician Devendra Banhart. On The Angels of Light Sing 'Other People' and We Are Him, Gira was backed by Brooklyn band Akron/Family. Hahn, Harris and Puleo went on to join Gira in the new Swans lineup assembled in 2010. Shortly thereafter Swans released their first post-reunion LP My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky. All Angels of Light albums were released on Michael Gira's label Young God Records. (en)

Angels of Light staat voor breekbare, ingetogen, muziek. Gira's sombere stemgeluid en akoestische gitaarpartijen staan centraal op de vijf albums die onder deze naam werden uitgegeven. Eenvoudig opgebouwde songs die bij gelegenheid aangevuld worden met elektrische gitaar, drums en geluidseffecten (loops). Iedere AOL - release is het resultaat van een tijdelijke samenwerking met muzikanten en artiesten van divers pluimage, meestal met New York als thuisbasis. Het 'Angels Of Light' - project houdt in zekere zin een stijlbreuk in met Gira's eerdere muzikale werk met Swans. Deze avant-gardistische band grossierde immers in beenharde noise -"sonic overload" zoals Gira het zelf omschrijft- en later in veelgelaagde, hypnotiserende, soundscapes. Angels Of Light klinkt melodischer en een stuk minder radicaal (brutaal) maar houdt net zo goed een vertaling in van de experimenteerdrift van Gira die weinig op heeft met platgetreden paden. Het Angels of Light - debuutalbum 'New mother' kwam uit in 1999, ongeveer twee jaar na het stopzetten van Swans. '90. Na het debuut volgden nog 'How I loved you' (2001), 'Everything is good' (2003), 'Other People' (2005) en 'We are him' (2007). Alles uitgegeven door Young God Records, een onafhankelijk platenlabel dat Michael Gira zelf oprichtte halfweg de jaren 90. Angels Of Light werd op non-actief gezet toen Swans nieuw leven werd ingeblazen. (nl)
