Ce taxon a été créé en 2017 par C. Foth et Oliver Rauhut lors de la redescription du spécimen d'Archaeopteryx de Haarlem reclassé comme un Maniraptora d'un nouveau genre (Ostromia). Le genre type est Anchiornis . Il est considéré par ses inventeurs comme étant peut-être le plus ancien et le plus basal taxon du clade des Avialae. Les anchiornithidés ont vécu du début de l'Oxfordien (Jurassique supérieur) jusqu'à la fin du Barrémien (Crétacé inférieur), soit il y a environ entre 163,5 à ≃125,0 millions d'années. (fr)

In passato gli anchiornitidi erano classificati in varie posizioni nell'albero maniraptora, con alcuni paleontologi che li classificano come una sottofamiglia di Troodontidae, altri di , o ancora come un assemblaggio di dinosauri in un grado evolutivo all'interno di Avialae. Nel 2015, Chatterjee creò la famiglia dei Tetrapterygidae nella seconda edizione del suo libro The Rise of Birds: 225 Million Years of Evolution, in cui incluse Xiaotingia, , Anchiornis e persino Microraptor; insieme furono proposti di essere il gruppo gemello degli Avialae. Tuttavia questa famiglia non è valida in quanto deve includere il genere Tetrapteryx, che è il sinonimo junior di Grus - quindi Tetrapterygidae è un sinonimo junior di Gruidae. Il clade era stato originariamente chiamato "Anchiornithinae " da Xu et al. (2016) e definito come "il clade più inclusivo che include Anchiornis ma non Archaeopteryx, Gallus, Troodon, Dromaeosaurus, Unenlagia o Epidexipteryx". Nel 2017, Foth e Rauhut nella loro rivalutazione dell'esemplare di Haarlem di Archaeopteryx (che hanno riclassificato in un proprio genere distinto, Ostromia) hanno scoperto che gli anchiornitidi sono una famiglia distinta più vicina alla discendenza degli uccelli.
