The AVMA provides information resources, continuing education opportunities, publications, and discounts on personal and professional products, programs, and services. The AVMA indicates that it lobbies for animal friendly legislation within a framework that supports the use of animals for human purposes (e.g., food, fiber, research, companionship). The AVMA Council on Education is the designated accrediting body for schools of veterinary medicine in the United States. The AVMA publishes the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) and the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR). Juli 1863 in New York als United States Veterinary Medical Association gegründet und erhielt 1889 ihren heutigen Namen. Die AVMA hat mehr als 93.000 Mitglieder aus allen tierärztlichen Berufsfeldern. Sie stellt Informationen, Möglichkeiten zur postgradualen Weiterbildung, Publikationen, Programme und verschiedene Dienstleistungen zur Verfügung. Sie gibt das und das heraus. Das AVMA Council on Education (COE) ist vom Bildungsministerium der Vereinigten Staaten mit der Akkreditierung der nordamerikanischen tierärztlichen Ausbildungsstätten beauftragt. Auch einige europäische und karibische Bildungseinrichtungen haben sich vom COE evaluieren lassen. Das Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities überwacht die Ausbildung des technischen Fachpersonals. Die American Veterinary Medical Association ist auch für die Anerkennung der postgradualen Spezialisierungen der American Boards bzw. Colleges zuständig. - L' American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) est une association sans but lucratif, fondée en 1863, qui représente plus de 89 000 vétérinaires des États-Unis œuvrant dans tous les secteurs d'activité, non seulement libéral ou indépendant, mais aussi salarié et public, du gouvernement, de l'industrie, de l'enseignement, de la recherche et des services dits en uniforme (armée...). L'AVMA délivre de l'information et assure de la formation continue. Elle facilite aussi pour ses membres l'obtention de remises pour des achats de produits et de services. Dans le domaine de la réglementation, elle exerce son influence en faveur du bien-être animal au sein des différentes formes d'élevage en rapport avec les besoins humains (production d'aliments et de fibres, recherche, compagnie et loisirs, parcs zoologiques). L'United States Department of Education (ED) a désigné l'AVMA comme organisme d'accréditation pour les 30 écoles vétérinaires des États-Unis et pour les écoles étrangères qui demandent cette accréditation. Avec ce pouvoir et cette compétence, l'AVMA est attachée au maintien et au développement des standards éducatifs de ces institutions afin de garantir les qualifications et la compétence de leurs diplômés.
